Will this Blu-ray drive work for 4K UHD discs?

Post by ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) » Tue Feb 15, 2022 8:33 am

Hi, i recently found, but have not brought it yet, a very cheap Blu-ray drive LG BH16NS40, the firmware is 1.3, manufacture date is 2015. I asked the seller, but 4K UHD discs cannot be read as they tested it, would i need to upgrade to 1.5 than downgrade to 1.2, or can i downgrade from 1.3 to 1.2 so i can read 4K UHD discs on this LG BH16NS40? Also is there any differences between the letters after the numbers on these models like "WH"16NS40 or "BH"16NS40? i was told these letters are just resell packages with or without the original retail box, but they are the same models, not sure if that's true? if anyone could please help me out would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Had to edit post, forgot to add, date of manufacture is 2015, is it safe to upgrade than downgrade this year of drive?

A manufacturing date of 2015 means it is highly unlikely to be UHD-capable. The hardware won't support it unless the drive has a SVC code on it of NS50 or higher. That would be printed on the label.

Is there is a reason you would buy a drive that old?

Hi, I don't know an other info besides it's a 2015 LG BH16NS40, firmware 1.3, i only found this one and it is very cheap drive, i only need to rip 2 UHD movies.

I'll message the seller and ask them about these requirements, SVC code on it of NS50 or higher on the label, I'll message you back to let you know. Thanks.

I was able to get a reply from seller, they said, the SVC code is NS40... so can this drive be flash to read 4K UHD discs ?

Yes, brick. It is too old and does not contain the required hardware inside for UHD, therefore, will never work.
Cheers :D
