LG WH16NS40 Throwing a Set Address Failed error

Post by swamprabbit » Tue Jan 04, 2022 10:47 pm

Hey, all.

Here is a link to the two pieces of hardware I'm using:
Drive: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00E7B08MS?re ... tails&th=1
Enclosure/Adapter: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06WWLCYC3?ps ... ct_details

I'm running into an issue. Whenever I connect the device to my computer, it seems to recognize it for about 50 - 60 seconds. It shows up in Device Manager under Disk Drives as SCSI Disk Device. After about 50 seconds, it disappears from the Disk Drives subsection, windows throws a "Last USB device connected malfunctioned", and then the device appears under Universal Serial Bus controllers as "Unknown USB Device (Set Address Failed)".

The device status reads: "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43) The USB set address request failed."
An event is logged reading: "Device USB\VID_0000&PID_0004\6&3af0f9ce&0&4 was not migrated due to partial or ambiguous match."

I've tried Googling solutions to this, and the only thing I keep seeing over and over is adjusting certain power settings for USB devices, which I did to no avail. Ran a troubleshoot on it and did a restart also to no avail.

I'm not sure if the drive is bad, or the adapter, or both, or none. Looking for some advice on how to move forward. I have not flashed the drive yet as it isn't recognized either by the computer or the SDFtool Flasher.

So, to start with, can you confirm:

1. You have the adapter's power supply plugged in.
2. You have connected the adapter to a USB 3.0 port of PC.
3. You are not using a USB hub (unless the hub has it's own power supply).
Cheers :D

Thanks for the reply. I had everything plugged in correctly to the adapter. I think it just turned out I either got a dud, or that adapter didn't have adequate power for the drive. I ended up just going straight from the drive into the motherboard via SATA and everything worked fine.

There may be some incompatibility issues with that particular enclosure/adapter and that drive. Not sure. Either way, I got it sorted.
