Absolutely NO spinup - LG WH14NS40-NS50 Drive
Absolutely NO spinup - LG WH14NS40-NS50 Drive
I have a flashed LG WH14NS40-NS50 drive. It worked great with UHD disks. After only a few cycles, the drive quit working. THere is no error anywhere I can find. WIndows finds the device. MakeMKV finds the device. However, when a disk is inserted, blue light flashes a few times, you can hear the head hash a little. Typical when mounting, but there is no disk spin. Not even an attempt of it. I put the drive to my ear and I dont hear anything other than the head hashing.
Head hasing stops as normal when trying to mount a disk. Nothing mounts. No errors.
Anyone seen this?
I did a reflash. Same ROM. It reported successful. Same result.
Ideas?

My guess: Either a polluted laser lens or a dead laser.

Laser for a non-spinny disk??

Just a hunch, but check the power connection. The fact that you can flash it means 3.3V is good, but IIRC, the rotational motor requires 12V... the end pins, so if the connector wasn't completely seated...

This is a return from someone I flashed it for. I repeated the issue they had. Its something internal.

I pitched it.

Hey I know this is going to sound dumb from someone who also sells drives but I recommend you stop selling desktop LG and Asus drive the quality control is complete trash I couldn't deal with it anymore sometimes I would get 4 bad drives for 1 good one,. I recommend the BU40N none bad so far. And forget remote flashes imagine trying to tell someone it's not your fault the drive they have gets hash errors after you flash it remotely for free for them because its defective they just think you owe them a drive because you ruined it with your firmware. Lol

Yea, I quit doing it. I had one of my own drives to bad in a couple of months. It worked great, then dead. I may have put 50 disks through it. I'm not impressed.

The symptoms you mention are the exact same as the ones I've been experiencing. The OPU is making some noises as if it can't focus or can't read the disc. The motor spins but barely. It seems that after 5 to 10 minutes between sessions, it will read the disc. Sometimes it will read fine but sometimes it will fail at the layer break (can't focus on the next layer).
It's unfortunate, given that I've had this drive for just 3 months. I went ahead and got a BP50NB40. While it's too slow, it was able to read a 4K UHD title without issues.
