Is it possible to upgrade the firmware of an ASUS BW-12D1S-U to rip UHD disks?

No, that drive is incapable of reading UHD - it's too old.

But, there is a possibility that it can act as a LibreDrive in the future... Hence the notation about "Status: Might be supported in future, keep fingers crossed".

LD does not imply UHD capability; it means that the drive can be told to ignore software restrictions. UHD requires hardware capable of reading the higher density data.

I am confused, because I have the same drive and on the front of the tray that slides out it says M-DISC LG UltraHD Blu-ray.

What does MakeMKV say in the LibreDrive section of the info window?

I'm not sure what that means, in the Info section it says the following:

I just updated MakeMKV and now it says
