LG WH16NS40 with drive platform MT1939

#1 Post by JoBatzMo » Wed Apr 16, 2025 8:14 pm

Hello,

My LG WH16NS40 drive arrived on Saturday, but I quickly realized that it only supports MT1939 and not MT1959. Currently, I’m ripping my DVDs and Blu-rays without modifying the firmware, and for the most part, the process has been smooth—except for a few minor glitches.

I'm wondering if there’s a way to upgrade my drive to support UHD. Initially, I was looking for a Pioneer drive, but as far as I understand, they’re currently difficult to find due to the latest firmware updates. I also checked the shop uhdfriendlydrives.co.uk, but it's temporarily closed.

Since I live in Germany, I’d be open to paying a surcharge if someone from the US or another region could send me a working Pioneer drive.

Would you happen to have any recommendations or possible solutions?

I truly appreciate your help—thank you in advance!

Best regards
Jo

A drive with the MT1939 platform can't be upgraded to support UHD. You'll need a drive with the MT1959 platform or one of the supported Pioneer drives.

The easiest way to get a Pioneer drive is from one of the sellers on this forum.
Asmcom is in Ireland and is the typical seller for Europeans. They are currently on a short hiatus and should be opening their shop again soon.

MartyMcNuts is in Australia (I think) and might be able to ship to Germany.

Billycar11 is in the USA and I don't think he ships to Europe, but you can always ask.

If you don't want a Pioneer drive, you can fairly easily buy an LG drive and flash it yourself. The Ultimate UHD Drives Flashing Guide has all the details. Probably the least worst LG option is to get something with a BU40N inside it and flash it as necessary.
