BD-RE BU40N (LibreDrive 1.04 or lower) stopping reading processes on UHD or BluRay

#1 Post by zappes01 » Sat Oct 29, 2022 10:41 pm

Hey Community,

I'm out of ideas. I've a new BD-RE BU40N with firmware 1.04 (original). I read the flashing guide several times and tried to flash the drive with sdftool flasher to "HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_BU40N-1.04-NM00500-212005061142.bin" enc (enabled). After that I downgraded the drive to 1.03 (HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_BU40N-1.03-NM00000-211810241934.bin). I've done the restarts of my drive after each flash. Then I started MakeMKV. The program is recognizing the drive and the UHD Movie correctly. But after starting the ripping, the process stopps everytime after a short period of time. Sometimes I got hash check errors (with 1.03) and after going back to 1.04 I got "too much A/V sychronisation issues". It doesn't matter if it's a UHD or a BluRay disc. Now I'm very concerned I made a mistake or killed my drive!?

This is the latest status:

Firmware type: Patched (microcode access re-enabled)
Firmware version: 1.04

I hope anybody could help!?

I've tried another run - with additional USB power cord connected to the drive and to the notebook. Same movie plus another UHD. Same issues. Please see log file:

I've the same issues with blurays. So any chance to get the drive back working?

Try doing a folder backup to rule out java as the issue
Yellow folder icon on top make sure to check decrypt

I don't want to kill the backup process to early, but it seems not like the normal behaviour, is it? See image attached. 23 hours remaining...

I would try a new disc at this point as there looks to be no power errors in your log

There's a bunch of stuff like that in the log. Either the disc is dirty or was manufactured badly. Have you tried gently cleaning the disc?

Thanks! Tried completely another movie (BluRay). Worked totally fine with my other Samsung BluRay drive. Unfortunately it didn't work with my BD-RE BU40N. Please see the log. I'm really desperated. Any chance to check the drive (firmware) or try a recovery?

If it's new - return it.

If not you should try to narrow down the problem.

Try it with another computer first.

Take the drive out of the enclosure and connect it to SATA of an desktop computer or use a good USB -> SATA adapter to check if the drive is the problem or the enclosure. The USB cables of the enclosure could also be an issue.

Can you recommend a good USB to SATA adapter?
