In the old days, we got CDs, with tiny pits that could be read with a laser diode. Then, we got DVDs, with tinier pits. And dual-layer DVDs with those tiny pits at different distances, so the laser has to change focus. Then BDs with itsy bitty pits, stacked up to 3 deep. And BDXL/UHD stacking them up to 4 deep.

So, yes, they are particular about anything that makes it hard for the laser to see those pits.
