Hello,
I'm looking for a little help. I've been using the Verbatim 43888 to rip my entire collection. I'm starting with 4Ks. I got through almost the entire collection when one day it failed to read a disc. I thought it was a bad disc at first, so I tried another and same thing. This made me think the drive ran it's course from ripping multiple disc everyday for a few months. Today I thought to try a Blu-ray to see if for some reason it's a 4K issue. Sure enough, it read the bu-ray instantly. Has anyone had this happen with a drive? MakeMKV still shows it as unpatched. The only thing I remember doing before this issue was adding the new Keydb at the time this was at the beginning of the month.

Which drive is it? LG BU40N or Pioneer BDR-UD04? Post the MakeMKV drive info & libredrive info sections.Twest wrote: ↑Thu Oct 16, 2025 2:22 amHello,

Yeah, drive info looks just fine. Most UHD discs require cleaning before ripping as they often have an invisible layer of film on them from the manufacturing process. Have you been cleaning them? If not, I suggest you do so before attempting to rip them again.Twest wrote: ↑Thu Oct 16, 2025 2:52 amI've posted the drive info below. Thank you for the help.

When you say failed to read, did you get errors in the log window?

Re: Verbatim 43888 No Longer Reading 4K Disc
I'm not getting errors, the drive simply won't recognize a 4K disc. I hear the drive trying to detect it, but stops after a while. At first I thought it was a dirty disc, but when it started happening over and over is when I thought it was a bigger issue. When this started happening, I had intermittent issues, but then I managed to rip a brand new movie. This made me think maybe some of my older disc are dirty. When I put that same new movie back in the same drive (to test the dirty disc theory) it failed to recognize the movie on my computer the second time and this drive has failed to recognize any 4k since. Today I tried the blu-ray and it was fine. It's so strange that now it just won't read any 4k movies including brand new ones Makemkv has the keys for

Yeah, try giving the UHD discs a good wipe with a microfiber cloth and see if that helps. Have you power cycled the drive recently? If not, that might be a good idea too. Also ensure the drive is getting enough power. The Verbatims can be quite power hungry. Use either USB-A or USB-C (better) ports direct from the motherboard (don't use case ports) or an AC self-powered USB hub of at least 30w.Twest wrote: ↑Thu Oct 16, 2025 3:06 amI'm not getting errors, the drive simply won't recognize a 4K disc. Re: Verbatim 43888 No Longer Reading 4K Disc
I'll try connecting it to the motherboard port and I have a powered usb hub that has worked when a device needs more power, so I'll give both a shot. Just out of curiosity, how do you power cycle drives? I've unplugged the USB C to C from the drive and let it sit for a minute or two, but is there an actual way to power cycle drives I'm missing. I've never had to troubleshoot a drive, so I'm a newbie here. Again, thank you for being so helpful.

Re: Verbatim 43888 No Longer Reading 4K Disc
In general, drives need more power when processing UHD discs due to the data density of the discs. There is a lot more data than on a standard blu-ray disc so UHD discs are harder to read. The laser has to work very hard thus requiring sufficient constant power.Twest wrote: ↑Thu Oct 16, 2025 3:45 amI'll try connecting it to the motherboard port and I have a powered usb hub that has worked when a device needs more power, so I'll give both a shot. Power cycling is simply removing power to the drive for a couple of minutes.
If a drive is USB powered, simply disconnect the USB plug.
If AC powered, unplug both the AC power supply and the USB cable.
If internal SATA, shutdown PC for a couple of minutes.
