I currently have two LG drives, one internal the other external. Between them I manage to backup my UHD discs though of late I have been facing occasional challenges that so far I have managed to overcome by persisting. The internal drive in particular is getting on a bit and this may contribute.
If I bought the Archgon MD-8102P-U3YC-UHDB-K external drive am I likely to have challenges before I can rip UHD discs?

The list of drives MakeMKV supports for UHD ripping is maintained in the Ultimate UHD Drives Flashing Guide post.
I don't think Archgon makes their own optical drives; I think they buy someone else's drive and put it in their own case and sell it. I don't know which drive is in the model you mention.

I think that it has BU40N hardware which in theory should mean that it is OK though perhaps needing of a firmware change.
Ideally I would like to diversify a bit with a Pioneer based drive but these seem to be in short supply at my favoured supply sources and the firmware change that they are rolling out could present problems.
Now would appear to be uncertain times for buying a UHD friendly drive and it can only get worse.
