LG WH14NS40 1.04 >>> ASUS BW-16D1HT 3.10 >>> LG WH16NS60 1.00

Post by Jethro »

First a Huge Thanks to Mike Admin for bringing all of this together, software, hardware, and firmware.
Thanks also to Blackened2687 for the V.2 LG flashing tool and LG firmware.
Thanks also to MartyMcNuts for the ASUS 3.10 firmware.

The LG WH14NS40 is a popular UHD drive that often goes on sale. There have been numerous posts related to cross flashing the firmware to the much faster LG WH16NS60 v1.00. In order to do this, it must first be cross flashed to the ASUS BW-16D1HT v3.10, or at least that is the most common procedure.

There are only 3 files that are needed, the LG flashing tool and the 2 firmware files.
The ASUS flashing tool can also be used, but I'm personnally more comfortable using the LG tool on an LG drive.

The V.2 LG flashing tool by Blackened2687 and LG WH16NS60 1.00 can be found here:

Here is the link to the modified ASUS FW Flasher + Downgrade Enabled Firmware + the latest MK firmware pack:

To make the process easier, I copy and pasted the three files into one folder.

1-Open the LG Flashing Tool; you should see your LG 14 drive in the first box. At the bottom of the tool is a folder icon, click on it and choose the ASUS 3.10 Firmware from the popup window.

3-Open the LG Flashing Tool, you should now see your drive as an ASUS drive with firmware 3.10. Once again click on the folder icon and choose the LG 16 1.00 firmware.

4-Run the Flashing tool as before and reboot.

With the LG 14 Hardware and LG 16 1.00 firmware, I'm getting respectable Rip / Read speeds up to 30 M/s

Jethro,

Thanks for gathering all this information for the LG WH14NS40 with 1.04 firmware in one spot. Flashing can be a scary operation and this trick of flashing Asus 3.10 firmware first is scattered about this forum and often applied to different drives.

Mike has released new MK firmware collection which now includes WH14NS40 with 1.04 firmware and moved the 1.03 firmware for that drive to the OLD folder. This MK firmware is at https://www.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic ... 19&t=19113 on this forum. So a new option is to flash the MK 1.04 firmware to a WH14NS40 drive with factory 1.04 firmware.

Your post already has links to both flashing programs and the downgrade enabled (DE) firmware which is nice to have convenient. As well as flashing instructions with images.

I just want to shout out a big THANKS to Jethro, Mike Admin, Blackened2687, MartyMcNuts, and the rest of this community for providing the tools, resources and exactly the right information I needed to allow me to rip my favorite BluRays to my private media server so that I can enjoy the content I paid my hard-earned $$$ for, free of restrictions, any time I want, without having to hunt through cabinets to find discs and pop them into my player.

It's so liberating! My LG WH14NS40 has become truly useful!

THANKS AGAIN!!!!!

Thanks jinx100, it's a big help to anyone who needs to return the drive in the original condition.

I finally upgraded to an SSD and my Rip / Read speeds have jumped from 30 Mbps to 50 Mbps on a legacy sata II Mboard, really impressed with the LG drive.

I recently switched for testing, from an BH16NS55 (tested with several UHD friendly firmwares)
to an WH14NS40. The main reason were some problems, ripping UHD disc with the BH16NS55.
About 80% of all UHD disc went fine using the BH16NS55, but on some disc, I ran into hashcheck errors
or strange SCSI errors when the drive trying to read UHD discs (MakeMKV 1.14.7).
The latest UHD disc I wasn´t able to backup with the BH16NS55, is "Anna" (UHD).
I tried everything, serveral firmwares, ripping the complete disc and also only the main movie to .mkv
Btw. ripping speed on the BH16NS55 is about max 3x, default speed about 2x, via an external USB 3.0
case...ICY BOX IB-550StU3S 5.25 case-ddeconin.

Yesterday I first tried the MK 1.04 firmware on the WH14NS40 (delivered with 1.03).
Same errors and speed on Anna UHD, like with the BH16NS55. I wasn´t able to rip this disc.
Then I did the crossflash from this thread ASUS BW-16D1HT 3.10 >>> LG WH16NS60 1.00

The WH14NS40 with WH16NS60 1.00 firmware, red the Anna UHD without any problems at all.
The drive went up ready to rip, as fast as no other firmware ever did.
I was able to rip Anna UHD with a max. speed about 7.2x 30M/s+
No errors, no problem...the rip went 100% fine.

I just want to share this experience. WH14NS40 with WH16NS60 1.00 firmware best setup
until now.

So long....

Billycar11 made an interesting point that the LG WH14NS40 1.04 can be directly flashed to the LG WH16NS60 1.02 firmware. The LG 1.00 firmware still requires the extra step/flash to the Asus 3.10.

no need for extra steps 1.04 to wh16ns60 1.02 MK i have flashed 100's of these the less flashing the better less chance for user error
Thanks Billycar11

Hey there,
Same thing here. Got a WH14NS40 1.04 SVC NS50 that I JUST bought in October. I heard it can be flashed with this firmware.
For my connector, I have a BENFEI SATA to USB connector and I have received (in the ASUS) a Service Error 3 and (in the HLDTST) stuck at 0%

Is there a flasher for my drive that works? I have been trying to get rid of the sleep bug and get it up to 16X for bluray.

Thanks
:)

Why email me to get the answer and then post it here your not going to get different info if the flasher is stuck at 0% your USB to sata adapter is not flashing friendly. This is the reason I have a list of flashing friendly adapters I sent you the link in the email hours ago

and if its this one it will 100% not work you would be lucky if you could power a slim drive with that a desktop WH14NS40 will not work with that you need powered adapters like the ones in my guide https://www.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic ... 16&t=19634

To All (successfully rip & write):

Back in Nov 2019, MartyMcNuts stated in post - [ https://www.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic ... 404#p80404 ]

"Just be mindful that the NS60 firmware is an "official UHD" firmware and is not compatible with other software such as AnyDVD and the ASUS firmware can cause burn issues, so if you plan to write discs and/or use AnyDVD, then stick with the WH16NS40 firmware."

Does the AnyDVD limitation with NS60 1.00 still hold true with this Dec 2019 posting to crossflash using V.2 NS60 1.00 firmware and flasher?

Jethro,

Thank you so much for this post. I found it after reading very intensively on this forum over the last few days. You mentioned your LG WH14NS40 came with firmware v1.03 - is yours the one with the SVC 50 suffix that others keep citing? If so, it sounds like I need to follow your method to flash mine (same model, but not the SVC50). If you're not sure, one way to find it is to open up MakeMKV, look under the LibreDrive section to the right under Drive Platform (see image: https://www.makemkv.com/forum/download/file.php?id=2348, source thread: https://www.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic ... 16&t=21104). Could you let me know if yours says MT1959 or MT1939?

If yours is MT1939 (same as mine), then I can take the plunge more confidently without worrying about bricking it. I see others with the WH14NS40 that are successful, but have MT1959. Only information I found on both the model number and MT1939 is this post (viewtopic.php?f=19&t=21045&p=77833&hilit=MT1939#p77833) stating to leave it alone and this post (viewtopic.php?f=19&t=18856&p=79712#p79712) stating it's not currently supported).

Could you please let me know if yours is the same MT number as mine? Thanks!

Also, thanks to all Mike admin, Marty, and Blackened for doing an impeccable job of developing this tool and spreading the knowledge. I really appreciate what you've done to help us reclaim control of our own media we purchased - it's great to be treated like legal owners instead of being treated like scum for paying for my own media.

I have an LG WH14NS40 NS50. I'm still seeing some conflicting information here. Someone mentioned that you can flash the WH14NS40 1.04 stock directly to WH16NS60 1.02. Can anyone else confirm this? Does the WH16NS60 1.02 firmware have the same performance as the WH16NS60 1.00 firmware?
