encrypt firmware for BU40N or not

Post by squattingcamera »

I recently bought a Verbatim 43888 with a BU40N inside and I want to flash the 1.03MK firmware to permanently enable LibreDrive, as recommended by the UHD flashing guide. The only thing I can't seem to find a definitive answer to is whether I should flash the firmware encrypted or not. My guess is, that the manufacturer-supplied firmware is encrypted, as the guide states that "firmware with date in 2020 is encrypted" and I bought the drive very recently. However, I am not able to find an unambiguous indication of whether I need to flash the MK firmware encrypted or not.
A clear way to determine whether the MK firmware needs to be encrypted for my drive would be greatly appreciated.
Below is the drive information.

Code: Select all

OS device name: /dev/sr0

Firmware date: 2124-04-23 13:47
Bus encryption flags: 17
Highest AACS version: 78

LibreDrive Information
Status: Possible, not yet enabled
Drive platform: MT1959

Yes, current FW is encrypted.

Newer OEM Firmwares and encrypted:

New Encrypted firmware
List of Know Encrypted firmware (so far, any firmware with date in 2020 is encrypted)

The recommended FW, "BU40N on any Firmware directly to > BU40N 1.03MK" is not. Use the 'enc' switch for the command line.
