Upgraded to Win 11, is my BW-16D1HT bricked now?

Post by Panda6375 »

Hi all, I bought a pre-flashed ASUS BW-16D1HTback in 2021 from these forums, and it's worked great for years. But this week I upgraded my PC from Windows 10 to 11. I also updated my motherboard BIOS. Now I'm afraid I borked something up because my drive can only recognize DVDs, but not Blu-ray discs. Whether it's in the file explorer or in MakeMKV, when I have a Blu-ray inserted they both say to insert a disc or that the drive is empty. It's like the laser doesn't even detect the disc or something. Am I screwed or is there some way to get this working again?

The firmware it's been flashed to is ASUS_BW-16D1HT_3.10_211901041014_KLGL1J94942. Windows 11 says the driver is up to date. I'm using the latest MakeMKV 1.18.1 and I'm a paid registered customer.

I'd appreciate any help you can give! Thank you! :D

I didn't upgrade from 10 to 11, but It seems odd that this is basically what has happened to me with my Pioneer S13JX this morning. It suddenly won't read anything from Blu media through Windows or MakeMKV.

Optical drives use two different lasers at different wavelengths, one for CDs & DVDs and one for blu-rays & UHDs. Typically when a drive stops reading the media associated with one of the lasers, it means that laser is dead. It might just be a coincidence that you upgraded to Windows 11.

I'm not aware of any Windows 11 specific problems with MakeMKV; there doesn't seem to be a large number of people talking about it on the forum.

Following up... I cleaned the laser lenses on mine after getting it opened up and the thing works perfectly now. You may have the same issue. Did you notice degrading performance/speed before it quit working?

see with a pioneer its usually a dirty laser most of the time
with asus or lg most of the time the laser is dead
one of the many reason i stopped selling lg/asus

Bummer. I tried a Linux live usb and it won’t recognize a Blu-ray Disc but it did play a DVD fine. So it’s probably not a Windows driver issue.

I did notice that brand new UHD discs were not always ripping properly (I had to clean them 2-3 times) but never had any problems with Blu-rays or DVDs until the day I installed Windows 11. That made me think it was a driver issue. I might try cleaning the lens but I’m afraid I will break something else.
