LG WH16NS40 v1.02

Post by AVDude923 »

So I'm trying to learn all there is to learn about ripping UHD/HDR discs to my Plex server. I have a WH16NS40 (purchased in May of 2016) with firmware 10.2 according to MakeMKV. I'm not quite sure what firmware I need to change to, to allow ripping of UHD/HDR discs. I'm comfortable running command line scripts, but everything I'm finding now is referencing newer firmware revisions, so I'm not sure where to go with this older firmware. Thanks in advance for any help you people may be able to provide!

When you start MakeMKV, what does it say in the Info window about LibreDrive status?

When I start MakeMKV, in the 'Info' section on the right side it says 'Status: Enabled' under 'LibreDrive Information'. I'm asking about changing the firmware because I'm unable to read the UHD/HDR discs.

It's not just the firmware; the hardware has to support the second generation of BDXL as well. If MakeMKV says it has enabled LibreDrive, you have the maximum capability your hardware can handle.

Late 2015 through early 2016 was the transition time between old and new hardware. The "drive platform" of MT1959 usually can handle UHD, but the earlier hardware could not, even though it can operate as a LibreDrive for everything else.

The request was intended to determine if the drive HW is too old for UHD support.

IF that complete section reads:

LibreDrive Information
Status: Enabled
Drive platform: MT1939
Firmware type: Original (unpatched)
Firmware version: 1.02
DVD all regions: Yes
BD raw data read: Yes
BD raw metadata read: Partial
Unrestricted read speed: Yes

then the drive will NEVER support UHD. LibreDrive facilitates UHD support... but, only w/ compliant HW.

So if my drive has a Drive Platform of MT1959, then it should support UHD/HDR discs?

If MakeMKV reports:

LibreDrive Information
Status: Enabled
Drive platform: MT1959
Firmware type: Original (unpatched)
Firmware version: 1.02
DVD all regions: Yes
BD raw data read: Yes
BD raw metadata read: Yes
Unrestricted read speed: Yes

you are already good to go.

IF, on the off chance you already flashed an incompatible FW to an MT1939 drive, it will misreport this info. & no longer read any discs.
