Help recovering BH16NS40 misflash

Post by mostly harmless »

Hi all,

I have an LG BH16NS40 (manufactured June 2015, originally ROM 1.03) that I accidentally flashed with WH16NS60 1.02 firmware. The drive is still detected in Windows, the tray opens/closes, but it won’t recognize any discs.

I’ve tried SDFtool Flasher but it errors, and I’m unsure if I should be using RECOVER mode or cross-flashing to ASUS BW-16D1HT firmware. Can someone point me to the correct firmware and tool to restore or recover this drive?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Use RECOVER mode and the first post of the SDFtool Flasher thread contains a link to the original WH16NS40 1.01 firmware file you can use. When you click RECOVER, in the popup window, select the firmware that is currently on the drive. In the normal firmware drop down box, select the WH16NS40 1.01 firmware that you download.
Cheers :D

Thank you so much for the response I really appreciate it. Just for your information and I hope this helps. following some of the links gives you an error . I was able to source to fall from an ultimate link but I thought you would like to know . Media Fire something appears to be missing... The key you provided for file access was invalid This is usually caused because the file is no longer stored on Mediafire This occurs when the file is removed by the originating user or media fire.

Must have been something on your end as all 3 mediafire links work fine. I just checked. Nothing has been removed. The other 3 files are attachments downloaded from the MakeMKV forum.

You are right. I tried again with firefox and it downloaded without attempting to open the actual mediafire site itself. Yes, thats what chrome did.

I still can't get it to flash. I downloaded the v1.3.6 tool ( I also tried the earlier one) I used the DE_LE_WH16NS40_1.01 Firmware and used Firefox to download both. I did a fresh reboot and attempted to flash. I ran the flasher as administrator, selected my drive and chose Recover . I went to the directory where I'd saved the bin file on my desktop, opened it I did notice at this stage that it actually didn't register that it had opened anything. I was still there with please select a firmware to write. So I chose it again this time it's stuck. Then I said start and it said done successfully but the drive didn't open at any time during the procedure. When I rebooted I did it once more. I Rebooted it again but it is still showing it's got the 1.05 firmware on it. The drive is opening and closing but it is saying empty disk .It does show when I've opened it or closed it. Anything else I can try? Thanks in advance.

I just read this again a number of times. What I’m taking as a bug is actually a two step process? So step 1 click recover and then click on the firmware that is currently installed on the drive. In my case 1.05 then Step 2 choose drop down and navigate to downloaded 1.01. Apologies. I’ll try tomorrow.

Yes, multi step process. The title bar of the file selection dialog boxes tells you what to do.
