Getting an LG BP50NB40: Foolproof? Help...

"I just downgraded my external USB LG BP50NB40, then flashed it over to the hybrid BP60NB10 you provided and it’s worked like an absolute charm!" from Hawk19x. Mon Apr 05, 2021 12:07 am

"FYI, this is the older method. It still works but if you use the newer "SDFtool Flasher", the HBD firmware is not needed." from MartyMcNuts. Mon Apr 05, 2021 1:20 am

Both posts very recent so I figure the info is still good.

I've been using MKV to rip my large and expensive blu-ray collection to my hard drives for safe keeping. But this UHD ripping is all new to me.

Any caveats before my purchase?

Talk to me as if I were 5 years old and tell me how to proceed once I connect this UHD reader / writer to my desktop computer. I mean every little step. Do this, do that, go here, download that, do this then do that, etc.

I will send you a reasonable cash donation for your help.

Thanks.

Its not fool proof right now there is currently a revision that cant be flashed and not sure if it says it on the outside of the box.
nb52 or eb52 are not flashable.
probably go for a different drive like the BP60NB10 or a rebranded BU40N in the Archgon or a buffalo.

Thanks Billycar11 for the caveat.

I'll purchase the BP60NB10 then.

Would you say it is foolproof?

nothing is fool proof you could be the first one to get a revision that is not flashable.
but thats unlikely
for now all the BP60s have been flashable

(With me it never fails that I am the guy who usually ends up with a problem.)

For ripping only uhd to my hard drive archive, is my system adequate?

Intel Core i7 - 3930K CPU @ 3.2GHz
ASUS P9X79 WS Motherboard
NVIDIA Geforce GTX 670 graphics card
Microsoft Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
ImDisk Virtual Disk Driver freeware to create a RAM drive
64GB DDR3 RAM

I have been playing my ripped HD Blu-ray movies on my HD LCD television using an HDMI connection directly from my desktop computer to the television and the 5.1 audio via a TOSLINK optical cable from my computer to my receiver.

Do you think I will be able to do the same with a ripped UHD movie with this same setup except I now have an LG OLED65C1 4k UHD television?

If not, any suggestions?

yes you can do that still but there is a better way
do HDMI direct to tv then earc to receiver so you get lossless audio optical cable is only dolby digtal+ at most, HDMI you can get atmos or dtsx
if your receiver is to old for earc do an HDMI pass through or another HDMI to it if your receiver is not 4k. dont use display port to hdmi adapter you cant get lossless audio out of those get a card with multiple HDMI outs like the asus Strix cards my 3080Ti has 2 hdmi 2.1 ports.
and if your playback pc is the same one as the one you asked if it was ok for ripping 4KUHD that one is not ok for playing 4K UHD you need a new GPU that supports H.265 decoding your 670 does not you will be missing HDR and 4K at full color the 600 series can do 4K at 4:2:0 i believe maybe 4:2:2 at 23/24hz but not full bit depth.
you will need a 1050 or higher for H.265 decoding.

I have ordered a Marantz 7015 without the HDMI 2.1 bug from a local audiophile shop owner who sells high end equipment.

I was told the order is in and to hurry up and wait.

Got my LG OLED right away on sale.
Got my Klipsch speakers right away on sale.

I was told receivers are being affected by chip shortages. Have you noticed their prices did not come down for Black Friday or Cyber Monday and probably won't come down on Dec. 26 either.

Yeah. But my main point was that the Marantz 7015 will take advantage of HDMI and earc and pass-through but I think my HTPC system is too old. It only has one HDMI out and I think it is only 1.4. So maybe I can rip but I think I cannot play.

This brings me to the inevitable: seems like I need a new HTPC desktop. But I hear this is getting tricky. I need a simple yet effective desktop HTPC build for ripping and playing 4k uhd movie discs and ripped 4k movie files on an LG OLED65C1 4k uhd television using a Marantz 7015 receiver.

all you need is a new GPU not a whole rebuild you can do that if you want but like i said you need a 1050 or higher and you get h.265 decoding
gpus are hard to come by but you can get a 1650 for like $350 or a 1050ti for $270 bad deals but if you need it you need it. just make sure it has 2 hdmi or 1 hdmi and a dvi dvi and hdmi are pin for pin compatible so you still get lossless audio.

what do you think?

Intel Core i5-10400 2.9GHz Processor; NVIDIA GeForce 1660 Super 6GB GDDR6; 16GB DDR4-2933 RAM; 256GB SSD+1TB HDD

What will I not be able to do?

Dolby Vision?
Atmos?
Etc...

Thanks.

Yup that will do it with the specs you posted above just need to setup the makemkv integration
no dolby vision though but no pc can do that and as far as i can tell nothing in mkv container actually displays it correct.
