Re: UHD drives
I hadn't benchmarked my NS60 vs my ASUS drive, but, anecdotal I'd say that's spot on as I've been ripping with the NS60 since I downgraded it and I haven't noticed a huge speed decrease in my rip times. I had read elsewhere that the LG firmware was slower but maybe that's on older drives I'm not really sure. In any case, the NS60 with 1.00 firmware is IMO about the best drive there is. It's official and LibreDrive supported. What more can you ask for?

Re: UHD drives
I'm lost. I read, I did research, I need an external drive. Does anyone here knows if there is one available that doesn't blow the wallet, has a english software and read/write UHD?

Re: UHD drives
The LiteOn EB1 does not currently support reading UHD disks in MakeMKV. It works fine for regular BD, but it is an "Official UHD" drive, and only wants to talk UHD to official UHD software.
I plug mine in periodically to test if Mike has added support for it, but last test (a week ago), it didn't work yet.

Re: UHD drives
MartyMcNuts/SamuriHL, thank you for that info as it really helps. I'm basically trying to decide do I pay a bit of a premium for the "official" WH16NS60 or save a bit of money and make a choice between the "friendly" WH16NS40 or BW16D1HT.
The other consideration is I just read about LibreDrives and MakeMKV so I'd want to make sure whichever drive I buy can take advantage of this.

Re: UHD drives
If you're going LG you want at least the NS55. The NS40 is hit or miss as to whether you'll get one that's UHD capable. Personally, I'd get the ASUS drive if you can find one and downgrade it to 3.02 and be done. I've had mine for over a year and it's performed flawlessly. The NS60 is a good option if you want both official and "friendly" at least when it comes to MakeMKV.
Re: UHD drives
Yes the NS60 is as fast as the ASUS but a bit more expensive due to it's UHD official status.
Remember it's cool to support your local drive resellers who make it as easy as one email or text to obtain a drive. Those folks would be jonghotti <alexcoluzzi32@gmail.com>, Billycarr11 <billycar5924@gmail.com> and MartyMcNuts <martymcnuts@outlook.com>.
Thank you!

Thank you for the input. Do you know if from that list there is one that we can use? Or maybe one that is not listed that would work?Woodstock wrote: ↑Sun Feb 24, 2019 4:50 pmThe LiteOn EB1 does not currently support reading UHD disks in MakeMKV. GALECOLLE, I think the BU50N cross-flashed to BU40N 1.00 would work. (I don't have one so never tried it and cannot confirm.)GALECOLLE wrote: ↑Sun Feb 24, 2019 10:38 pmThank you for the input. Does anyone know for sure if this works? @Billycar11, @jonghotti

Yes works all day long. I sold the few BU50s I had and stick with the BU40N the legit one with the UHD Blu Ray logo on the bezel.

I'm not sure what exactly is to do a cross-flash but seems that at least there is one that I could try. I'd need to educate myself to learn it.
Not sure if this is possible but could I get an internal drive and buy a cable that converts SATA to USB 3.0? Power would be a problem maybe.
The other thing is that I saw people mentioning about supporting local, I liked the idea I think that I will send an email to those folks and see if there is someone around.
Thanks

Re: UHD drives
cross flashing is flashing a drive with a different firmware other than its own it will then show up and act as the other drive mostly.GALECOLLE wrote: ↑Sun Feb 24, 2019 11:55 pm

example flash a LG WH16NS40 to a Asus BW-16D1HT for a faster read speed
or
cross flash any friendly drive to a LG WH16NS60 to get rid of the sleep bug.
yes it is possible i would say over 50% people who buy from me are putting the internal drives in external enclosures like this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MR ... 0DER&psc=1 and https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XR ... 1XP5&psc=1 and budget option https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07452Z3KH/re ... Re: UHD drives
Another, cheaper option is to use a Unitek Y-1034 cable instead of an external enclosure. This is what I use for my 2nd back-up drive. It converts SATA to USB 3.0 and includes a power adapter.

Re: UHD drives
@Billycar11,
If you still have your WH16NS60 and a blank DVD and/or BD, could you possibly run a little test and post your results?
I heard from @SamuriHL that he (and another person) could not successfully burn a BD with his WH16NS60 cross-flashed to ASUS 3.02. (They made some coasters!)

Re: UHD drives
Yes I did lol. Yeah I tested it because a user I've been helping used the patched flasher to cross flash his 1.01 LG ns60 to Asus 3.02. so it shouldn't have touched his encryption data or calibration data. So I flashed mine the same way and fried a bdre to the point of not being able to recover it. I'd be curious if anyone else with a ns60 sees a similar burning issue with cross flashed firmware.
Just to clarify both of us were fine after flashing back to LG firmware. I put 1.00 back on using the patched flasher and wrote the same iso to another disc with no problem.
