Hi all, I'm new (obvious, right?)
So, I just picked up my LG WH14NS40 with (of course) 1.04.

I'd like to have an un-crippled blue ray writer/reader and of course 1.04 won't cut it. Was trying to go back to WH14NS40 1.02
but it doesn't allow me to do it (Write DRAM NG message) so I'm assuming I need to cross flash to Asus first then down to
1.02. However, I'm seeing where it is recommended that I can successfully go from WH14NS40 1.04 straight to WH16NS60 1.02 with
no problems?

What are the benefits of going to WH16NS60 1.02 exactly? Any downsides? Does this take all restrictions of and make it
a libredrive?

Thanks all, appreciate all the work you do. There is such an abundance of info here easy to get overwhelmed.
All this is answered in uhd guide pinned
It fixes sleep bug and makes it rip faster no downside of you use makemkv

I don't really use makemkv, however, I guess I can start. Just looking to take all restrictions off the drive and have it operate at full capacity and with all it's capabilities unlocked.

Hey everyone, new here, but reading through the forums and appreciate all the work and knowledge put out here. I have a WH14NS40 arriving tommorow that I plan to flash to the WH16NS60 mentioned in this thread. After the flash this should let the drive read UHD discs from what i'm reading, my question is what software do I need to use if I just want to then watch these UHD discs on my PC? Thanks.

Like direct disc playback?

Yes.
use vlc with the makemkv integration and disable menus
i highly recommend you have an hdr monitor/tv and H.265 decoding support if not its not worth it

Even with Display Primaries set? I know it's not actually HDR, but it won't be washed out and still looks better than a normal BD, imo.

Not worth it in my opinion I too did not have an HDR tv back a few years ago and back then vlc did not tonemap so it looked way worse than regular Blu-ray now it tonemaps but it's still not close when you compare it to real hdr.

Do you happen to know how MPV compares? (That's what I'm using)

Modern VLC never provided good looking UHD playback to me, even with its modern tone mapping feature (Perceptual/PP2.2 is close, but MPV is still better).

I haven't bought a HDR display yet, using a XG35VQ. Was planning to get another monitor for my primary workstation and move this elsewhere, eventually...

Mpv is slightly better but then no direct disc playback I think

If you're going to tonemap hdr to sdr there's really only one acceptable solution. Madvr. You can use that with something like mpc hc or what I use is jriver Mc. Both are supported by makemkv for real time decryption.

It does actually. You can call it from the terminal with e.g. mpv bd:// --bluray-device=/dev/sr0 or even mpv bd:// --bluray-device=yourfile.iso

I'm running Debian, and that looks like a DirectShow filter.

As soon as the world stops being insane with delivery times to my location, I'll probably pick up a HDR display. I need a second monitor anyway, and my current one is still worthy of being thrown on the second workstation area.

Thanks! I have an HDR monitor and TV. My Radeon VII should do H.265 in VLC right?

Also I've been reading about the Libredrive, is this something I should do or should I just do the firmware rollback? And if I do Libredrive is there a specific firmware I need to use for that? Thanks
