I thought if it had firmware version 1.04, you had to do a sidegrade first before you could do a downgrade?
1.02mk WH16NS60 is the equivalent of side grading and no need for downgrade if you use makemkv
Ahh, I see now. I thought side-grading/cross-flashing just meant flashing an LG drive with an Asus firmware or an Asus drive with an LG firmware. I went ahead and just flashed my drive straight to HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH16NS60-1.02-NM00100-211810291936.bin and it worked like a charm. I've already successfully been able to rip a few 4K UHD and regular blu-rays in MakeMKV with it. Thanks!

I read about LG WH16NS40 as being good for bluray ripping if firmware gets downgraded. But I can't seem to find that model. Instead, I can find LG BH16NS40 - is this model any good?
Or what other models are most reliable?

In my experience of 300+ drives the bu40n is the most reliable. The bh16ns40 is fine if it gets no read errors it's the same as the wh16ns40 just the boxes version

by bu40n you mean LG BU40N, which is a laptop blu-ray drive?
does it require to have a certain SVC code or something else very specific, like it is suggested here in the case of the BH16NS40 - https://www.myce.com/news/the-ultimate- ... ive-83254/ ?

yes its a slim drive nope all bu40ns are compatible it natively supports UHD disks and has no sleepbug so you can rip and play UHD discs officially and unofficially

I tried "CSL – USB 3.0 SSD/SATA Adaptor Converter for SSD SATA 1/2/3 2.5 Inches (6.35 cm) HDD 3.5 SATA Drive (HDD/SSD) USB Attached SCSI Protocol (UASP) including mains adaptor" from Amazon.de but it didn't work with otical disc drives. Are there any simple SATA to USB adapters under say 20 euros on Amazon.de that would work or do I need to get a more expensive enclosure?

Here is a link to the one I bought: https://www.amazon.de/dp/B01K22TZ3I

There is a subforum dedicated to these services and which is also noted in the first post. Pay attention and read the guides/instructions/subforums. For these types of services, see here:

And use their appropriate contact information.

I did, but those aren't available in Europe. Ordering from the US means additional postage and customs charges and non-European power adapter. Does anyone have experience with Inateck's Unitek branded converter (https://www.amazon.de/dp/B00N4JLNXM)? It's advertised as being compatible with optical drives but so was the CSL one...

Thank you to everyone for an easy to follow guide. Just purchased my WH16NS40 and changed the firmware no problem. Testing first disc and so far, all is great.

There are some bad reviews there. It appears to be a cheap copy with a dodgy power supply. We don't buy cheap junk. It's just not worth it. Better of spending a little more for a better quality one.
