new BW-16D1HT with an old firmware

Post by yaoqb »

Newly bought an BW-16D1HT from a local market and the firmware version show on the makemkv is Revision: 1.01
the label on the drive shows that it was manufactured sept. 2019
I put an UHD blu-ray disc into it, it spins but couldn't read it out but regular bluray works just fine.
I'm a bit confused about the firmware that on this drive. I have been told that the firmware revision 1.01 refer to an old drive with the same model '16D1HT' but wont read uhd discs :?
have I been deceived? Is that the store just sell me an old drive with a fake lable on it?
I havent flash the drive with the firendly firmware otherwise it means an upgrade other than a downgrade

Has anyone encounter such situation? what am i suppose to do?
Shall I dump the original firmware and flash the uhd friendly one? will the drive be bricked?or just ask for a refund?

ps:newbie here, how to add images to the post?

Take that drive and return it and let me send you one a little less sketchy. Please. Whatever's going on with that, you don't any part of it!

Its an old drive varient 'BW-16D1HT a' without bdxl support its wired that its manufatured in Sept. 2019 which well past the year 2015.
here is how it looks in makemkv:

and this is how the drive looks:

Need to pay attention to the dent patten from top. It looks different to the '4K capable' version of the drive which show bellow.

I have return the drive and purchase a new one online.

That’s some straight up fraud there, where did you get this from?
I’m driving home from the warehouse with 20 of those and they are legit 1959 hardware manufactured in March 2020.
I’d be happy to send you one or two...

Thank you for your kindness. I've got a BU40N from somewhere else.I tested it with my laptop and it works just fine with those UHD discs.
Just a heads up, you can spot this fraud one very quickly from its apperence.
Notice that MakeMKV shows the chipset as MT1939 rather than MT1959, and the serial number is also inconsistent with the label. Get to your dealer and ask for a refund immediately if you get one of those.

Are you sure about that? But the BU40N drive I've got does match even after I did a firmware downgrade. Not sure if other drives are the same as well.
