Today the support for "official UHD" drives was finally enabled (not as smooth as it was hoped). As of today most "official" drives are supported, EXCEPT ones with latest firmware. If you have an "UHD official" drive, you should get one of two messages:
Code 03DF - your drive is working fine, you can make UHD backup with it
Code 01BE - your drive firmware version is not yet supported.
The proper explanation is coming soon. Thanks for the patience!
And according to Hitachi LG the official UHD drives are WH/BH16NS60, BU40N and BP60NB10 they’re easy to spot they have the Ultra HD Blu Ray logo on the bezel as opposed to the standard Blu Ray logo.

I want your firmware!!!!

Please navigate to MakeMKV data directory (location can be looked up in preferences). Inside you will find one or more files named dump_SD_xxxxx.tgz . Please send them all to support@makemkv.com . Thanks!
Done. I'll also leave everything as-is for now so I don't risk losing something that may be important. Thanks again for all the hard work; it's very appreciated!

What OS are you on? For me, on Linux, this is what MakeMKV looked like after ripping a disc on my laptop:

https://owncloud.now.ai/index.php/s/UPb1hifvpgog22d

The "DEBUG: Code 03DF/..." line is what you should see if it's successfully able to rip from your drive. My BU40N worked fine with the 1.01 firmware (note the "Revision:" line in the box on the right; that's how the 1.01 firmware on this drive identifies itself).

And no, you don't need to redownload the app. The "Downloading latest SDF" and "Downloading latest HK" items in the log window are the app downloading the data it needs to do the rip. If you see "DEBUG: Code 01BE/...", as mike said, then your drive isn't cooperating. It looks like 1.00 is the latest firmware for that drive on the HLDS site, so it may just not work for a bit yet, but I'm sure mike is working on it.
I have a BU40N that is _not_ working with firmware 1.01, but it seems to be some other weird kind of firmware, maybe? The Drive Information box in MakeMKV reports this (on a Mac):

Drive Information
OS device name: /dev/rdisk2
Current profile: BD-ROM
Manufacturer: HL-DT-ST
Product: BD-RE BU40N
Revision: 1.01
Serial number: KZPHCCG2136
Firmware date: 2117-12-22 12:21
Bus encryption flags: 1F
Highest AACS version: 66

But in the log window it reports:

"Optical drive "BD-RE HL-DT-ST BD-RE BU40N 1.01d" opened in OS access mode."

Firmware 1.01d? Whatever that is ... Also, confirmed I have the latest keys_hashed.txt in my data directory and I am attempting to rip a disk that is known to work (2001. I feel like we're all the same kind of sci-fi nerds.)

Not sure if it's possible/practical to downgrade/sidegrade the firmware.

Don’t worry about the “d” it’s always reported that way from OS X (ok for ASUS drives at least).

What happens you start a rip?

Hello everyone
Congratulations to Mike for this big job as the whole team.
I unfortunately have a LG BU40N reader with a firware in v1.02 and I will have to be a little more patient because I have the error code 01BE / 03 as Mike says.
I know that Mike works for us so we will wait a little bit even sinous are a little impatient. 😉

We haven’t needed the txt file in some time now. It’s possible to downgrade/flash just like the other drives , but without knowing what’s not working it’s impossible for us to give any advice. Did you attempt to rip and get to the selection screen? Were errors present when attempting the rip?

I have the WH16NS40 with patched 1.02 firmware. It was decrypting 4K disks prior to all of this and I am getting the DEBUG: Code 03DF message but I have noticed that decrypting ANYTHING (including DVD's), the process seems more sensitive. I seem to be getting more crashes in MakeMKV that I wasn't getting before.

Hello all, I'm able to backup UHD discs with my setup. I thought I would share my configuration and details in case it's helpful to anyone.

I have a BU50N that I purchased from Amazon.com around December 30th 2018. Firmware version appears to be "BW50" (sometimes appears as "BW50d" in places). The firmware date is "2116-12-22 10:52". It's connected via USB enclosure (a Vantec slim USB3 enclosure) purchased on amazon.com at the same time, to a mac running macOS 10.14.3 and MakeMKV 1.14.2. Everything is working great and I'm getting 6X speeds out of the drive!

It never gets to the selection screen, it goes through the decryption part then goes back to the main screen. The start of the debug log window goes like this:

Code: Select all

MakeMKV v1.14.2 darwin(x64-release) started
Debug logging enabled, log will be saved as /Users/mattyj/MakeMKV_log.txt
Optical drive "BD-RE HL-DT-ST BD-RE BU40N 1.01d" opened in OS access mode.

Poking around the forum here, this kind of points to the AACS version the drive recognizes vs what MakeMKV is capable of ...? Or something along those lines.

The 2001 disk claims AACS2.0/C v66. The drive claims "Highest AACS version: 66". But since others have said they ripped the 2001 UHD, seems like there shouldn't be a mismatch? Unless I did something earlier and inadvertently to blacklist AACS v66 on this drive (like try to rip a disk before this drive was supported ...?)

Cool, thanks. I'll have to go another route, though, unfortunately. My household is 100% Mac, I have no friends, and I work for a company that is in the 'content creator pipeline' in a big way, so probably frowned upon to do that at work. :)

My NS60 came with 1.02. I just bought it in December. I've not yet tried it as I was waiting for the support. I'll try tomorrow but it's definitely not flashed.
Ok so I can't read. It came with 1.01. I don't know why I thought it said 1.02. I'm about to install it and see what happens. Based on previous responses I'm guessing it's not going to work yet. Sorry for the confusion. MFG date is 10/2018.

EDIT: As expected DEBUG: Code 01BE/03
