Enclosure / cable recommendation for BU40N I can buy from within the EU?

Post by pustal »

Hello everyone. I was trying to fine a USB enclosure (or cable if that fails) for my BU40N. I live in Portugal and all the reccomended cases I find, I only seem to find them for sale from US sellers on eBay and that would be a blow on import taxes.

Do you guys know and can recommend me something I can buy from here? Even if is from AliExpress and such (since they use European warehouses to sell from here).

Thank you.

Hello,
I've a DELOCK 42595 which is perfect. This exact model is not made any more but they have a replacement. They are in Germany if I'm not mistaken.

Hello,
I also recently bought a BU40N drive. What firmware version and production date does yours have?

As you can see from my post, I own a Delock 42603 enclosure.

It works with my ASRock DeskMini A300 (Windows 10) and my 2019 MacBook Pro. However, unlike its predecessor (the Delock 42595), it doesn't have an external 5V DC port.

I can't confirm whether it's suitable for firmware flashing (i want OmniDrive for Games preservation) or ripping 4K UHD discs, though, because—at least for the moment—LibreDrive support or the drive platform isn't showing up for me.

That’s why I ordered the following items:
  • BENFEI USB 3.0 to SATA adapter (2-in-1 USB-C/USB 3.0 to SATA III adapter for 2.5"/3.5" HDD/SSD and SATA optical drives; includes 12V/2A power adapter; supports UASP)
  • CY Adapter Slimline SATA 7+6 (13-pin) optical drive to SATA 7+15 (22-pin) adapter
You can order these from Amazon Germany.

Are you sure there is no power port ? I had an enclosure where the female plug was on the PCB but no holes were made in the box to let the male plug connect.... It was an easy fix.
Also recent SATA/USB interface chips are better than they were. (nowadays, one chip can do every variant of SATA interface, be it OD or DD or SSD... ) So if you enclosure is not that old, it should be OK for firmware update...

It was the enclosure's fault! I can confirm 100% that the Delock 42603 enclosure does not provide an optimal SATA-to-USB connection. Furthermore, the PCB inside the enclosure lacks a port for a power adapter.

After connecting the BENFEI USB 3.0 to SATA adapter—along with its included 12V/2A power adapter and the CY Slimline SATA (7+6/13-pin) optical drive to SATA (7+15/22-pin) adapter—to my MacBook, MakeMKV now recognizes the drive platform "MT1959" and reports the LibreDrive status as "Possible, not yet enabled."

Tomorrow I’ll test it on the DeskMini A300 (Win 10) and see if SDFTool Flasher also now correctly detects the drive.

along with its included 12V/2A power adapter
I don't think that part matters though. Most likely neither the adapter nor the drive will / can draw power from the 12V and I doubt that it has any 12V to 5V conversion. The 12V should only matter when it's a 3.5" HDD / 5.25" ODD.

That is possible; I can test it tomorrow without the 12V connection. However, if that turns out to be the case, the problem lies with the SATA-to-USB chip inside the Delock 42603 enclosure. As previously mentioned, when using the Delock enclosure, neither MakeMKV nor the SDFtool Flasher detects the "MT1959" drive platform, nor is the drive recognized as "LibreDrive" or as having "encrypted firmware." These lines are missing or do not have a green checkmark.

I was able to test it on the DeskMini A300 as well. It works perfectly now, just like on the MacBook, and is correctly recognized.
