Brand new BU40N shipped from China good or bad idea?

Post by sebna »

Hi All,

I am looking at various drives for UHD ripping and these CN based sellers offer great prices on ebay but I wonder what is the experience? Are they selling genuine drives etc.?

Another one - since it is a slim internal SATA drive - would it work work with SATA to USB kit left over from HDD shucking (WD Elements)?

Thanks

Hello,
I've bought two of them in the last 5 years. They run fine and, as far as I know, they are genuine. Disclaimer : there are so many Chinese sellers that the chance you buy from the same sellers than me ir very very remote... So your experience can be different.
I've bought them on Aliexpress because you have 90 days to return the goods and ask for a refund.
As for the use of a disk enclosure, yes and no...
First, the disk SATA connector is different from the one on optical drives. But one can find adapters. Then what is the firmware into the disk cabinet interface ? It could be locked on a hard disk drive and refuse to see the optical drive...
I would buy a BU40N already in an enclosure or buy a good enclosure at the same time I'll buy the drive..
Just my 2 ¢

No. It still requires AC power so use an AC powered USB to SATA (plus a slimsata adapter) adapter or buy an external enclosure.
Cheers :D
