My Verbatim 43888 drive can't read 4K UHD discs anymore

Post by JStef »

I bought a Verbatim 43888 drive last year and it has worked perfectly until recently, but now suddenly it won't read 4K UHD discs anymore.

This is the drive information from one of the recent tries:

Drive Information
OS device name: G:
Current profile: BD-ROM
Manufacturer: HL-DT-ST
Product: BD-RE BU40N
Revision: 1.05
Serial number: MZFP4TG0126
Firmware date: 2124-04-23 13:47
Bus encryption flags: 17
Highest AACS version: 82

LibreDrive Information
Status: Possible, not yet enabled
Drive platform: MT1959

Disc Information
Label: PrimalRage
Timestamp: 2023-01-30 17:31:12
Protection: AACS2.0/C v77
Data capacity: 59.8 Gb
Disc type: BD-ROM UHD
Number of layers: 2
Bus encryption flags: 80

I understand that I probably have to "flash" the drive to enable the LibreDrive, but
a) like I mentioned earlier, it HAS worked before with 4K UHD discs, so I don't know if that's the actual problem? :?
b) I'm not very tech-savvy, so I'd like to get some help to make sure that the process is done correctly

I hope that one/some of you can help me because I use MakeMKV quite a lot for ripping special features to watch on the road. And as I am adding more and more "4K UHD only discs" I would like to be able to rip those too...

Thanks in advance :)

It has/will never work on that firmware version as libredrive is not enabled. Libredrive is a requirement for UHD discs, so if you say it has worked previously, then it must have had a libredrive compatible firmware version on it and you must have updated the firmware at some point.
Cheers :D

Thank you for helping.

I don't remember updating the firmware, but that would make sense. Since the drive was working perfectly, I wasn't aware that updating the firmware might be a problem.

How do you suggest that I proceed?

To enable UHD ripping, you need to flash it back to an older, libredrive compatible version. Either BU40N 1.03-MK or BU40N 1.00, the latter if you use other UHD ripping software besides MakeMKV and Xreveal or use Linux.

On Windows, you can use SDFtool flasher to flash it. The first post of the SDFtool flasher thread contains the download link for it and also for the firmware pack.
Cheers :D

I'll do that, so thanks a bunch :)

Is the video about the flashing process still accurate?

Also, I gotta say that I'm really impressed by this forum. So please: keep up the good work, everyone.

This is one of the most easily flashed drives. It literally takes seconds to do. Others are more complicated, but this one is super easy to flash.

Hi Marty! Do you know if the "or use Linux" case applies to ASUS drives / firmware? Or is it LG specific? I have a BC-12D2HT (the newer "combo") and I flashed it with the respective MK firmware from the official pack (instead of the BW firmware in the all-you-need pack). Regular BD works fine but I haven't tested with a UHD BD yet. Just want to get a heads up if I also need to crossflash to something to get it working on Linux for that.

(Sorry if I interrupted the original discussion here.)

I'm pretty sure it is BU40N specific.

The BC-12D2HT should be flashed with BC-12D2HT 3.11-MK. I've never used Linux so couldn't say for sure. You will just have to try a UHD and see if it rips ok.

You don't need a video tutorial. Just know that BU40N 1.03-MK must be flashed first to remove the firmware encryption so all you have to do is:

1. select the drive
2. select the BU40N 1.03-MK firmware
3. click START

In about 30 seconds, it is done. If you want to use BU40N 1.00, you can now repeat the process.

I flashed the drive with BU40N 1.03-MK which enabled the LibreDrive, but I still could rips 4K UHD disc due to different encryption errors.

I've enabled internet access in the MakeMKV preferences and downloaded the keydb.cfg file and copied it into the .MakeMKV folder, but that didn't help either.

Then I flashed the drive again with BU40N 1.00, and now I can "open" 4K UHD discs, but I still get errors.

Do any of you have any idea what the problem might be?

Which info do you need from me to help diagnose the problem?

need to see the errors to help post the log in plain text
full thing with the code markers is best

For now it looks like the problems were caused by "disc errors" during the saving process as I've been able to rip a couple of 4K UHD discs now after cleaning the discs with a fine microfibre cloth and restarting MakeMKV.

I never had ANY problems like this with regular Blu-rays. Are the 4K UHD discs more sensitive? Or do I maybe need to clean the drive as well in some way?

Yes 4K are a lot harder to read
But also depends on the drive pioneers give a lot less read errors
