@rsaotome Please would you post an amazon or ebay link to the generic case you mentioned?
I've spent about 30 minutes searching on both sites but cant find the exact one you mentioned on either site.

Thanks!

This is the one I bought most recently, it's the same as the ones sold on Amazon & works great.

Thanks. The wierd thing is that with that enclosure I get different results between Windows 11 MakeMKV and the native linux version (1.18.3).
I'm using an Archgon BU40N (bought about a month ago from Amazon), with Libre firmware 1.03 installed.
With the Windows version I get a bunch of read errors when MakeMKV tries to read a UHD disk. Under Linux (ubuntu 24.10), MakeMKV rips the disk just fine.
It's like Windows is inserting some extra DRM checks between the drive and MakeMKV or something.
I also saw the same or very similar errors under windows with 3 different SATA-USB adaptors (straight into the drive) that I bought from Amazon.
Unfortunately I didnt think to try those under Linux before I returned them.

I don't have a linux setup to test against, but I can confirm the exact same behavior (lots of hash errors) with the exact same drive (Archon BU40N). Some searching implies that the USB controller chip Archon uses (PID_5910) on the small pc board which plugs into the slimline SATA port and creates the USB-C port on the back is designed to prevent low level comms to stop things like ripping.

You can confirm if yours has PID_5910 (I guess older drives don't have this updated chip) by going to device properties/details in Device Manager of the drive. It's under Hardware IDs.

As a result I've been using the Benfei adapter (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07JGT17B8) straight into the slimline Sata port (with an adapter cable https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B5L5Z9LM), bypassing the controller board that Archon provides completely, and my Windows rips are working now.

Which leads me here, lol. I'd like to get a different enclosure for this drive so it's not just sitting out all naked like! :D

Huh, never tested on Linux, any flavor, just Windows 10 LTSC.

Only used the regular LG BU40N, but I'm pretty sure at their core, they're all the same.

I did have trouble ripping "Mission: Impossible - Fallout UHD" with MakeMKV & Xreveal with the BU40N (original & a Verbatim rebadge), then I tried a real WH16NS60 (not one those frankensteined models from Chinese sellers on eBay), also threw in a real ASUS BW-16D1HT, and it ripped it just fine on both.

My copy was from when it was first released, never opened, spotless, so I bought another, same problem, same place, same error, but worked on the other 2 drives. No amount of cleaning helped to get it working on the BU40N.

I can recommend RaidSonic Icy Box IB-AC640-C3 (USB 3.2 Gen 1). I use it for my LG BU40N, works flawless...

See: https://raidsonic-static-content.s3.eu- ... 0-C3_e.pdf

Unfortunately, it's already very difficult to obtain.
