Something Interesting about this drive BDW-PR1EPDVPP100

Post by OneDay »

So I took a chance on ebay and bought a Pioneer BDW-PR1EPDVPP100. I Just received the drive today. Hooked it up and opened Makemkv to find out it has been flashed or look like it has been flashed to BDR-209. Seeing this I was wondered how they did this since from what I have read there is no way to flash these drives. So I put a blu ray in to see how fast these drives rip. Well I get not disc inserted. So I unplugged the drive and re connected it and still nothing. So now I'm sure this things is toast or bricked supper hard. What are you thoughts? Here is the info Makemkv shows

It has no equivalent in Pioneer's retail lineup.
This drive was most likely developed specifically for Seiko Corp. (Epson).
Technically, it uses hardware very similar to the Pioneer BDR‑209/S09 - the same ONP‑8342A mainboard and the Renesas R8J32740FP42 chipset.
The only differences are OPU and different firmware. It writes DVD and CD media, while Blu‑ray discs are read‑only (it's combo drive).
Pioneer designated the hardware as SAT8680.
There's nothing you can do with it in terms of UHD support / BD writing.

Is the hardware set in the Renesas R8J32740FP42 chipset?
OPU? Not sure what is?
I think I might just swap out the Renesas chip. I have a donor BDR-209 that I can de solder and solder it on the BDW-PR1. See what happens.

OPU = Optical Pickup Unit.
In my opinion, this swap won't work, if only because it uses different software.
If you can, return this drive. It was probably taken out of a damaged Epson DiscProducer duplicator.
