Hi all — Windows 11 + MakeMKV 1.18.2 + Verbatim 43888 external drive.
Drive reports HL-DT-ST BD-RE BU40N rev 1.05 (MT1959) and UHD discs fail with:
KEY EXCHANGE FAILURE - KEY NOT PRESENT
AACS host certificate is revoked by your drive
LibreDrive compatible drive is required ... video can't be decrypted
I read the Ultimate UHD Drives Flashing Guide Updated 2026 and it seems I may need BU40N 1.03.
Questions:
1. Is rollback to BU40N 1.03 the right next step for this exact drive?
2. Can I flash it from Windows 11 over USB-C (Verbatim enclosure)?
3. Which exact 1.03 firmware binary should I use?
(Example: All you need firmware pack: HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_BU40N-1.03-NM00000-211810241934.bin — correct?)
4. Do I need an intermediate step (unencrypted 1.05 / crossflash) before 1.03?
5. Does the weird firmware date mean anything?
6. What's the Brick risk if followed correctly?
Goal: rip UHD discs in MakeMKV on Windows 11.
Thanks!

The host cert was revoked as expected as you tried a UHD disc without flashing the drive!! Libredrive is a requirement for MakeMKV to be able to read UHD discs. You should flash the drive to BU40N 1.03-MK before trying to read a UHD disc.billsv5 wrote: ↑Fri Jan 16, 2026 6:11 amHi all — Windows 11 + MakeMKV 1.18.2 + Verbatim 43888 external drive.

1. Yes
2. Yes
3. Yes, that is B40N 1.03-MK
4. No
5. MakeMKV always shows a 1 instead of 0 as the 2nd digit
6. Zero. Just don't do anything stupid like flash a desktop firmware to it (it could still most likely be recovered though)
Cheers

Excellent.
One more Q: The existing BU40N-1.05 on the drive is not on your list of known encrypted firmware so far. On the makemkvcon64 command, do I need the "enc", or leave that out?
Thanks!

Thanks, Marty.
Flashed the Verbatim 43888 back to 1.03 (including "enc" in the command) - all worked - movies are flowing!

Re: Verbatim 43888 / BU40N 1.05 - UHD “host cert revoked” - Windows 11 rollback to 1.03?
Got a new BU40N 1.05.
This drive is stated to be a real UHD drive. That means that this drive has a host revocation list that is updated via MKB from Blu-ray and UHD Blu-ray inserted in the drive.
Does a firmware downgrade to 1.00 or 1.03 MK defeat the host revocation list or does it remain updating host revocation list via MKB also when I do a firmware downgrade to 1.00/1.03 MK?
Thank's!

@Billycar11: Mhh... it seems I did ask the wrong question or I did not understand your answer...
Does the firmware 1.00 or 1.03 MK prevent updating the host revocation list of the drive when inserting Blu-ray or UHD Blu-ray? Yes it does or no it doesn't?
Thank's!

No, nothing can prevent it! Everytime you insert a new blu-ray or UHD disc, the drive will automaticaly update those lists. Flashing the drive to 1.00 or 1.03-MK will enable libredrive and therefore MakeMKV simply won't care if there's been any revocation and should continue to work.johannu wrote: ↑Fri Jan 30, 2026 8:19 pm@Billycar11: Mhh... it seems I did ask the wrong question or I did not understand your answer...
