Also, since Pioneer ceased manufacturing optical drives several months ago, the worlds supply is dwindling rather quickly!

The slimlne XS08 and even the UD04 you can still sort of get UHD-patchable versions of now are good drives, but actual S series 5. 25" drives are the best there are. I don't know how long before S12/S13 (or X12/X13) drives made after Dec 2022 will be libre drive patchable, but the consensus is they definitely will be. And when they are, what little stock there is of those drives now will turn into genuine unobtanium.

Now is the time to spring for one, or forever hold your peace.

Recently bought a random external drive on Amazon and it turned out to be a Pioneer BDR-206. I know Mike said 'all' Pioneer drives will be supported but I saw some older posts saying that only 208 or higher are UHD compatible. I'm still within my return window so wondering if I should return or hold onto it?

If you want to rip UHD, return it. Even if it does get libredrive enabled, it still won't read UHD discs.

It's the base model, almost the same as the 212V. It can be cross-flashed for UHD redability.
