Pioneer UHD Drive Slowing to Error

I've been using a BDR-212DBK, flashed to 1.01 firmware in a Vantec NST-536S3-BK enclosure, for about a year and it's worked flawlessly...until now. Now when I put a 4K disc it almost immediately drops down to the 0.5-0.6x read rate and then, if I walk away from my PC too long, fails with a timed out error, like this:

I've tried 3 different UHD discs so far and all end that way. I increased the retry rate to 7 (from 5, I think), restarted the drive and left it unplugged for a while, and none of that moved the needle.

Any other tips or help would be greatly appreciated.

Update: I tried to move the drive to a new USB port on the PC, move it to a new power outlet and even removed the drive from the enclosure and then secured it again. When I put in a 4th UHD disc I get this:

If possible connect it to SATA directly or use a SATA-USB adapter that can handle optical drives.
