I decided to try to flash the drive anyway. Might as well before returning it to the store where I bought it
That solved the problem. MakeMKV now sees the drive as a LibreDrive and I can rip my blu-rays. Haven't tried with a 4K disk yet but would assume that it also works. In case anyone else has this issue with the Verbatim / LG combination
