Archgon MD-8107-U3 Linux Issues

Post by Civil9808 » Mon May 05, 2025 12:15 am

Hello, I have encountered several, likely related, issues trying to get the Archgon MD-8107-U3 working right on my Linux machine. My primary machine is a Nobara Linux machine (Fedora derivative), but I have access to an Ubuntu system where most of this was done. If you only care about the biggest issue please skip to #3.

1) Flashing does not work on MakeMKV 1.18.1
I was able to flash on my Ubuntu system fine, but only on version 1.17.7. 1.18.1 would hang whenever I would initiate flashing

2) After flashing to HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_BU40N-1.03-NM00000-211810241934 - found in the everything firmware zip file on the UHD drive help post - the drive was no longer visible to my Fedora system running the Flatpak of MakeMKV. The error was "The program can't find any usable optical drives.", yet the drive would appear in my system without problems
There's a good chance that something went amiss as I was trying to get MakeMKV installed natively instead of through Flatpak so I could flash the drive, but if anybody has insights here I'd appreciate it.

3) The biggest issue, the flashed version of the drive still will not read UHD blurays.
Here's the full dump of info:

**Drive Information**
OS device name: /dev/sr0
Current profile: BD-ROM
Manufacturer: HL-DT-ST
Product: BD-RE BU40N
Revision: 1.03
Serial number: ...
Firmware date: 2118-10-24 19:34
Bus encryption flags: 17
Highest AACS version: 77

LibreDrive Information
Status: Enabled
Drive platform: MT1959
Firmware type: Patched (microcode access re-enabled)
Firmware version: 1.03
DVD all regions: Yes
BD raw data read: Yes
BD raw metadata read: Yes
Unrestricted read speed: Yes

**Error Message**
Error 'Scsi error - ILLEGAL REQUEST:COPY PROTECTION KEY EXCHANGE FAILURE - KEY NOT PRESENT' occurred while issuing SCSI command A40..002000800 to device 'SG:dev_21:0'
Error 'Scsi error - ILLEGAL REQUEST:COPY PROTECTION KEY EXCHANGE FAILURE - KEY NOT ESTABLISHED' occurred while issuing SCSI command AD010..080002400 to device 'SG:dev_21:0'
Can't read AACS VID from disc - most likely current AACS host certificate is revoked by your drive
Saved AACS dump file as /home/user/.MakeMKV/MKB20_v77_ARCANE_SEASON_1_-_DISC_1_3953.tgz
LibreDrive compatible drive is required to open this disc - video can't be decrypted.
Failed to open disc

The previous version of the drive was 1.02, I believe, and it produced this same error. The flashing process was also error-free.

I tried on two different Blurays (Arcane's and Ghost in the Shell's UHD US releases) and neither worked, which is likely not related to needing to post the dumps. I can make those available if that's needed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated :). Thank you!

Once flashed with BU40N 1.03-MK, flash again to BU40N 1.00. This is the best firmware to use on Linux.
Cheers :D

Hi Marty, thanks for your response. I gave this a try and I have a different error. Here's what I've got:

I found the firmware in the Downgrade Enabled Firmware V.2 zip file.

New firmware information on the drive:
Drive Information
OS device name: /dev/sr0
Current profile: BD-ROM
Manufacturer: HL-DT-ST
Product: BD-RE BU40N
Revision: 1.00
Serial number: ...
Firmware date: 2116-12-20 15:28
Bus encryption flags: 17
Highest AACS version: 77

LibreDrive Information
Status: Enabled
Drive platform: MT1959
Firmware type: Original (unpatched)
Firmware version: 1.00
DVD all regions: Yes
BD raw data read: Yes
BD raw metadata read: Yes
Unrestricted read speed: Yes

I am now getting the same error for both Ghost in the Shell (GITS) and Arcane - "The volume key is unknown for this disc - video can't be decrypted"

I have attached the GITS AACS dump file, just in case the key has, indeed, not been generated. Please let me know if that's the case, or if there's still an issue with the drive. Additionally, if I grabbed the incorrect firmware, please provide a link to the correct firmware.

Thanks!

Have you made sure MakeMKV has internet access? It is needed so the UHD hasheed keys can be downloaded as needed.

Have you noticed anything in the log stating HK download failed or is disabled?

The host OS has internet access for sure, I'm not sure why MakeMKV wouldn't. I also have not noticed anything in the logs suggesting the HK download failed. Is there a way to check this affirmatively, like a text file hiding in a directory I can look for or a command I can run to be sure?

Thanks again for the help, Marty

On the General tab of MakeMKV's preferences, make sure the checkbox for 'Enable Internet access' is checked.

I verified that was checked, and I also noticed booting up this time that the software downloaded the latest sdf.bin without reporting any issues. What would be the next thing to check?

Thanks again

I'm fairly sure that MakeMKV already knows your disk's decryption key. MakeMKV's "hashed keys" database should have been downloaded into this file:

Code: Select all

$HOME/.MakeMKV/_private_data.tar
so it might be worth checking this file exists on your machine. (It's about 9MB on mine.)

Have you tried downloading the public KEYDB.cfg file, copying it into MakeMKV's data directory (i.e. $HOME/.MakeMKV in your case) and restarting MakeMKV? MakeMKV can use KEYDB as a fallback database, if available, should it not find your key in the "hashed keys" database.
