Pre Purchase advice LG BH16NS40

Post by olddognewtricks »

I'm looking at buying a used LG BH16NS40 and although I've read a load of the posts here thought I'd just get some comfort before I pull the trigger.

The drive is reported as.....

ROM Ver 1.00
Manuf Date Jan 2013
Model BH16NS40

I'm hesitant to post the full serial as I haven't bought it yet, however it starts...

301HJYZ020 (I'm assuming, possibly incorrectly, that the serial may indicate the batch and therefore the firmware, internal capabilities?).

I think I read in other posts here that this model is 4K UHD capable with the correct firmware, but not in all cases? Is this unit likely to be capable of 4K UHD?

I'm pretty comfortable flashing stuff from a 'nix platform, would people suggest Windoze, 'nix or does it not really matter?

Any other suggestions appreciated, although I've not done makemkv stuff before I've done stuff with bootloaders on phones which isn't a million miles away.

If it is from 2013, it is not capable of ripping 4K UHDs. The earliest 4K UHD capable drives didn't appear until the very end of 2015.
