Hi.
What are the pros/cons of getting an
LG BP60NB10 (UHD Official External Slim 9.5mm USB 2.0 | Rip speed 6x BD 66 ~45 mins BD 100 ~1 hour 5mins)
vs
LG WH16NS40 (UHD Friendly Internal 5.25 sata | Rip speed 8x BD 66 ~45 mins BD 100 ~1 hour if flashed properly) + Vantec NexStar DX2 USB3 enclosure
?
As written above, I know the physical size of the BP60NB10 is much smaller and that the rip speed of the WH16NS40 is just slightly higher.
What else should I consider?
Is one of them more reliable than the other?
Is one of them more noisy than the other?
Thanks!

Both suck but if you must, then the BP60NB10 is more reliable and even though the rip speed is 6x max vs 8x max for the NS40, it does mantain that 6x speed for longer, whereas the NS40 may reach 6x-8x in spurts but the majority of a rip is generally 4x-6x.uhd4k wrote: ↑Sat Apr 05, 2025 11:48 pmHi.

Can you please elaborate why both suck?MartyMcNuts wrote: ↑Sun Apr 06, 2025 2:08 amBoth suck but if you must, then the BP60NB10 is more reliable and even though the rip speed is 6x max vs 8x max for the NS40, it does mantain that 6x speed for longer, whereas the NS40 may reach 6x-8x in spurts but the majority of a rip is generally 4x-6x.

Only Pioneer drives are recommended. They are simply far superior readers and wrtiters than drives from any other manufacturer. LG's quality has dropped considerably over the past few years.uhd4k wrote: ↑Sun Apr 06, 2025 6:41 amCan you please elaborate why both suck?MartyMcNuts wrote: ↑Sun Apr 06, 2025 2:08 amBoth suck but if you must, then the BP60NB10 is more reliable and even though the rip speed is 6x max vs 8x max for the NS40, it does mantain that 6x speed for longer, whereas the NS40 may reach 6x-8x in spurts but the majority of a rip is generally 4x-6x.

The lower end Pioneer drives (such as BDR-212V and Verbatim 43890) can still be sourced in stores but the only way to get a higher end model (BDR-S13 series) is via a seller on this forum that may still have some available with UHD compatible firmware.

Do you mean that if I manage to buy one of these then I'm good? The lower end Pioneer drives (such as BDR-212V and Verbatim 43890) can still be sourced in stores
Or do you mean that I also have to be lucky enough to end up with one that has an old FW, and that I might get a higher FW and be completely screwed?
As I'm trying to stay on a budget, is there a recommended drive that I can get in stores, preferably from Amazon (without a chance of getting a version that will not allow me to rip UHD Bluray discs or replace the FW)?
Thanks.

The lower end models I mentioned should still come with older firmware and can be flashed. You should contact Billycar11 and provide the MakeMKV Drive Info & LibreDrive Info sections once you have the drive.uhd4k wrote: ↑Wed Apr 09, 2025 10:24 pmDo you mean that if I manage to buy one of these then I'm good? The lower end Pioneer drives (such as BDR-212V and Verbatim 43890) can still be sourced in stores

Re: LG BP60NB10 vs LG WH16NS40 + Vantec NexStar DX2
So basically Pioneer "UHD friendly" drives read UHD bluray discs more reliably than LG Official UHD drives?
That sounds insane.

yes pioneers are way better at reading hard to read disc
but you would never know unless you also have an lg/asus that would struggle with it

Do you mean that some percentage of LG drives would struggle or that all LG drives would struggle?Billycar11 wrote: ↑Wed Apr 16, 2025 10:02 pmyes pioneers are way better at reading hard to read disc

Also, I assume that drives that are worse at reading discs (i.e. LG drives) are probably worse at writing discs as well, or is writing a different story?

Yeah, I'll probably do little to no burning too.
So basically outside of buying from someone in the forum*, my best option is BDR-212V (which is only "UHD friendly") + Vantec NexStar DX2?
Is there another Pioneer or other recommended drive that I can buy from regular retailers?
*Basically from asmcom since he's the only one that ships worldwide, but he also seems to almost always be on vacation (and the prices would not be cheap)
Thanks.

you could use a shipping forwarder if you dont want to wait until asmcom is back but i dont recommend it.
