BP50NB40 NB72 - Unable to flash

Post by Broomie »

Hi,

I am pretty new in the game here, so excuse me if this issue come off as a rookie mistake.

I have an LG BD50NB40 with SVS code NB72, manufactured in 2023. It seems that I am not able to flash the firmware using SDFtool Flasher.

I get the error message 'the drive you have selected does not have the correct drive platform' and I see a red cross at MT1959 Platform.

Drive information from MakeMKV shows this:

Drive Information
OS device name: D:
Current profile: BD-ROM
Manufacturer: HL-DT-ST
Product: BD-RE BP50NB40
Revision: 0403
Serial number: [redacted]
Bus encryption flags: 1B
Highest AACS version: 50

Am I completely out of luck flashing this drive, or did I miss steps beforehand?

I can't seem to find any information for the specific revision no. or SVS code.

I would appreciate any feedback to this - Thanks!

Did you set the flashed to "enc" (encoded) software flashing? If not, it will fail on that new of a drive.

By "enc" you mean ticking the Encrypted Firmware? Yes I tried that with no luck.

I even tested it out in the older version of SDFtool, where I tick the "enc". When pressing start nothing happens.

Oh, and by the way. No Libredrive information is showing up in MakeMKV.

I have opened plenty of blurays through MakeMKV before, so I guess it should have downloaded the Libredrive info?

I'm not sure if you've seen it but there is a new BU40N firmware release from June 2024: v1.05 (https://www.lg.com/us/support/software- ... 0N.AVAA10B)

Hopefully LG haven't put too much effort into securing these latest drives and firmware updates.

Edit: I'm not too familiar with the stock firmware flashing tools but 17/73 vendors on Virustotal flagged the new LG update utility: https://www.virustotal.com/gui/file/e84 ... 4e457ee25f

Hopefully this is just an indicator of some level of obfuscation

Did you get it to work? I’m totally new to this and was going to pick up this drive for 4k ripping. Thanks!

You should read this and you picked the most cumbersome one to flash:

viewtopic.php?f=16&t=19634

Read the bottom section in "Recommended firmware to flash".

For NB72 no can't do UHD from what I can tell Mike could change that but he would have to have a look at it

Thanks for the update Billy, I'm glad to hear there are no new challenges for BU40N drives.

It is surprising to hear that NB72 isn't using a Mediatek controller. Are they using a Pioneer solution? If not, has there ever been a third company which produced a BDXL-compatible drive platform?
