Reporting success following the mac / linux portion of this flashing guide. I purchased an LG WH16NS40 from Amazon for ~$60. It arrived with FW 1.05. Downloaded the all you need firmware pack and sdf.bin on my 2010 Mac Pro running Mojave 10.14.6. MakeMKV would only launch from terminal using sudo /Applications/MakeMKV.app/Contents/MacOS/makemkv. I think that was the only deviation from the guide that I had to use. Backing up TAR now...
Really hoping someone can help me out. I have a WH14NS40, manufactured in 2017, NS50 code and I sued the GUI to flash the WH16NS60 1.02 MK FW (though this particular issue was around on stock firmware). The drive works great for ripping Blu Rays, but CDs will not be read with it.
At first I thought it was a Vantek adapter issue, so I bought another SATA cable and just routed it outside of my PC case(no 5.25 bay), but it was still not working. Trying to update the official firmware, I was getting an "No valid ATAPI device" error. That lead me to the flashing side, which lead to this guide, and I've successfully (and easily, thank you so much for this guide) updated it. But CDs still aren't read. I know this is the MakeMKV forums, but EAC, VLC, nor WMP will see the drive at all. Device Manager in Windows 10 sees it in Device Manager and File Explorer. From what I've seen on reviews, it SHOULD also support CDs.
Any advice or pointers?
Figured this out btw! I was setting up a laptop today and noticed it had the same exact issue. Comes down to me accessing the devices with a drive in RDP. Turns out if a Group Policy isn't set, the drive won't be seen in an RDP session. Why RDP into a machine with a drive if I have to be at it anyways to handle the discs? Headless server!
I've been lurking here for a bit, checking out the various drives, figuring out just how deep I want to get into this entire process, and decided I might as well make it official and create an account. It's only been about two weeks since I started ripping my Blu-Rays, and it's really awesome how MakeMKV is pretty easy to use.
I was just wondering: I looked around a bit but was unable to find any sort of general chat area, does that not exist? It's cool if it doesn't, I just thought it'd be nice to do something other than only ask questions, ask for help, etc. It can sometimes be a little intimidating joining a community like this.
I don’t understand why Alex Coluzzi (alexcoluzzi32@gmail.com) is not mentioned as a seller of drives. I feel like he used to be the only person listed. I’ve bought several drives from Alex and he’s always been available when I had a question.

believe he goes by Jonghotti and has his own thread on this forum here.
I'm a bit unsure if my drive is able to be flashed. My model is the "BD-RE WH14NS40" but the instructions says "3. SVC NS50+ LG only on label for NB drives NB50+". I don't understand this and does that mean that my drive can't be flashed?
I have downloaded "The all you need firmware pack" and then followed the "How to Flash videos and commands" instructions. Everything went fine (see output)

Thanks a million. May I ask what does it mean to have a non-encrypted firmware? How will affect my use of MakeMKV? Does it mean that I have no reason to flash the drive?

Yeah you don't have encrypted fw.
You still need to flash it
Does not change anything with makemkv

Thanks a lot!
It can already read UHD discs. Just put one in and start ripping like normal.
Cheers

Hi, I have a "verbatim eu" Pioneer BDR-UD03 firmware 1.14 with BDXL icon on it. I try to read a UHD disc and it doesn't work. Is it possible to flash to make it recognize UHD discs and rip them?thanks
