SDFtool Flasher
Re: SDFtool Flasher
Can I make a most humble suggestion-
Would somebody please explain WHICH firmware to use with each drive in the instructions on the first page?
I spent a long time getting nowhere because I was trying to flash an LG BH16NS55 drive with the DE_LG_BH16NS55_1.02.bin firmware because
- there's nothing in the instructions that says not to
- the model matches
I found out that I was supposed to be using a different firmware from a Reddit post.
To put it bluntly- I suspect a LOT of support issues could be solved with very little effort.
*Normally I would offer to write it up but I simply don't understand what's going on, maybe it's a secret I missed or common knowledge that I looked for and escaped me.
Cheers

Anyway, essentially for all LG internal desktop drives the recommended firmware is WH16NS60 1.02-MK. For UHD discs, this firmware works with MakeMKV and AnyDVD HD. For use with other software, such as DVDFab, you can flash to WH16NS60 1.00 after first flashing to WH16NS60 1.02-MK.
Cheers

Re: SDFtool Flasher
I have an ASUS BW-16D1HT and I do not know what firmware I have (Win10 Ent 22H2 19045.4291). I ran you latest updater SDFtool Flasher.exe (viewtopic.php?f=16&t=22896) and all of a sudden, I'm getting an error in Device Manager - Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Failed). I uninstall it, scan for changes, and it continually reappears. Running Win10 Hardware & Devices Diagnostics does not resolve the issue.
I have been having problems burning BD50 discs - no issues with BD25. I only ran your software to check the firmware. I understand that there is a "sleep bug" that may be involved.
Please advise on this (my unit is from 2018).
Thank you!

the sleep bug has nothing to do with burning that only has to do with UHD discs
sdftool would not cause the usb error.
try power cycling everthing computer usb case ect if that dont work your drive or usb case has died and it not from this

Re: SDFtool Flasher
Yeah, I already posted elsewhere that it clearly wasn't the problem. I posted more detailed info about the drive, firmware, and asking what the best options are (in the main forum).

Re: SDFtool Flasher
Hi @Marty McNuts
I just bought a ASUS BW-16D1HT BD drive which is connected to my Apple MacBook Pro via a mulit-port hub. I run Windows 11 through Parallels. I downloaded the SDFtool Flasher (v1.3.5) and I am unable to flash to DE_ASUS_BW-16D1HT_3.02.bin because the tool doesn't seem to recognize the drive or any drive for that matter. It's just blank when pull down. Any idea what I am doing wrong?

You can either use the command line in terminal or you could create a bootable windows USB stick, instsall MakeMKV on it then add the SDFTool Flasher and firmware files to it and boot from it.

Re: SDFtool Flasher
Thank you very much for the reply @MartyMcNuts. I am not that expereienced using Terminal commands. Would you happen to have instructions for installing SDFTool using Terminal? Your help is much appreciated.
Re: SDFtool Flasher
Thanks for the reply, @MartyMcNuts. I've never used Terminal, and I know you listed the commands at the top of the post, but is it possible to share more detailed per-step instructions with exactly what I need to type for each step? For example, I'm not sure how to interpret step 4: "copy sdf.bin and the firmware file extracted from the all you need firmware pack into /tmp folder." I keep getting "zsh: permission denied" when I type in a command in Terminal. Sorry but I am just not that computer literate with these things. I appreciate any help from you or other forum members.
Mac/linux commands to flash.
1. download sdf.bin https://makemkv.com/sdf.bin
2. download the all you need firmware pack
3. Extract the file you need for your drive from the all you need firmware pack pick from the recommended firmware section.
4. then in terminal on the Mac
copy sdf.bin and the firmware file extracted from theall you need firmware pack into /tmp folder.
5. in terminal change directory "cd /Applications/MakeMKV.app/Contents/MacOS"
6. type "./makemkvcon f -l"
This will show your drive identifier should look similar to this ''/IOBDServices/D5D25996'
Found 1 drives(s)
00: /IOBDServices/D5D25996, /dev/rdisk3, /dev/rdisk3
HL-DT-ST_BD-RE_BU40N_1.01_211910161032_MOFK6283224
7. to perform the flash, type "./makemkvcon f -d '/IOBDServices/D5D25996' -f /tmp/sdf.bin rawflash main -i /tmp/your firmware filename here
or ./makemkvcon f -d '/IOBDServices/D5D25996' -f /tmp/sdf.bin rawflash enc -i /tmp/your firmware filename here
if your firmware is on the encrypted list

Re: SDFtool Flasher
I think what you're running into is a macOS security problem. By default, Terminal does not have 'Full Disk Access' in the Privacy & Security tab in System Settings. You could grant Terminal Full Disk Access if you want, but you don't literally have to use /tmp in step 4.erizock wrote: ↑Tue May 14, 2024 11:45 amThanks for the reply, @MartyMcNuts. What it means is: put the sdf.bin file and the relevant firmware file in a temporary folder of your choice. '/tmp' is a Unix-y way to say that. You could, for instance, put it in a folder on your desktop. Wherever it ends up, you have to specify that location on the subsequent commands, replacing /tmp with the location you chose in step 4.
To simplify the typing of that location in subsequent commands, you can literally drag a file from Finder into Terminal and macOS will put the fully qualified path to the file on the command line. (https://support.apple.com/guide/terminal/drag-items-into-a-terminal-window-trml106/mac)
When you get to Step 7, you would type out the first part of the command and then instead of typing '/tmp/sdf.bin' you would instead drag sdf.bin from Finder into Terminal and macOS will put the correct path on the command line.
Re: SDFtool Flasher
Thanks for the help @dcoke22. I created a folder on my Desktop called "ASUS firmware" and put the the sdf.bin file and the relevant firmware file in it, but all I keep getting is "quote>" after I type everything in Terminal and hit Return. This is what I see Terminal:
