Help flashing drive BD-RE BU40N 1.02

Post by gianlucam »

Hello!
I have just purchased a BD-RE BU40N from Amazon ( the Archgon USB 3.0 External UHD 4K Blu-ray MD-8107S-U3YC-UHD )

I think I have most of the information I need to upgrade the drive (currently on firmware 1.02) so that I can backup UHD movies.Below is the full drive information shown by MakeMKV

Code: Select all

Drive Information
OS device name: I:
Current profile: BD-ROM
Manufacturer: HL-DT-ST
Product: BD-RE BU40N
Revision: 1.02
Serial number: MZFN1UB4401
Firmware date: 2120-12-01 17:16
Bus encryption flags: 1F
Highest AACS version: 72

LibreDrive Information
Status: Possible (with patched firmware)
Drive platform: MT1959
Harware support: Yes
Firmware support: No
Firmware type: Original (patched version available)
Firmware version: 1.02
DVD all regions: Possible (with patched firmware)
BD raw data read: Possible (with patched firmware)
BD raw metadata read: Possible (with patched firmware)
Unrestricted read speed: Possible (with patched firmware)
The information on this site is plenty but also very scattered and confusing, so this is what I understood:
1) First upgrade the drive to firmware 1.03 ( DE_LG_BU40N_1.03_MK.bin )
2) Then downgrade it to 1.00 ( DE_LG_BU40N_1.00.bin ).
Is that correct?

Which tool should I use to upgrade/downgrade ?
- makemkvcon.exe (command line)?
- makemkvcon64.exe (command line)?
- Or some other Windows GUI tool?
If I use the command line tool what are the flags/options I need to specify?

Where is the "official" download for the firmware files?
I have found this thread that lists some firmware:
viewtopic.php?f=19&t=19113
Then here I found completely different firmware:
viewtopic.php?f=16&t=19634

Thank you in advance for all your help!

Thank you @dcoke22, that helped me weed through this forum.

For the benefit of others, I've ended up using the tool "SDFtool Flasher.exe" and flash the firmware file "DE_LG_BU40N_1.03_MK.bin", which worked successfully. I'm now able to backup the UHDs I have using either MakeMKV or AnyDVD.

Thank you for posting a resolution @gianluca. I am about to buy the same drive off of Amazon and attempt this myself. How was your experience with the actual UHD ripping?
