Yea it is a Windows only filter. Even the Envy will run embedded Windows to use it. That being said, JRiver does have a linux version (obviously not with madvr support). I don't know how it handles HDR->SDR conversions though.AffSeda wrote: ↑Sun Jun 21, 2020 1:02 pmIt does actually. You can call it from the terminal with e.g. mpv bd:// --bluray-device=/dev/sr0 or even mpv bd:// --bluray-device=yourfile.isoBillycar11 wrote: ↑Sun Jun 21, 2020 12:39 pmMpv is slightly better but then no direct disc playback I think
I'm running Debian, and that looks like a DirectShow filter.
As soon as the world stops being insane with delivery times to my location, I'll probably pick up a HDR display. I need a second monitor anyway, and my current one is still worthy of being thrown on the second workstation area.

Ok..installed the 1.02 firmware on the WH14NS40 and it's working fine. I then installed MKV, VLC, and moved the files over that are needed to play the disc. And it's working! One more question, how do I know if it's in HDR or not? When playing the movie the codec info in VLC says "Planar 4:2:0 YUV 10-bit LE. Usually when a game is in HDR the screen automatically switches to the HDR preset, but with this it just plays the movie. Do I have to manually enable HDR on my monitor when playing this to get the true HDR quality? It plays fine as is, but the monitor doesn't switch to it's HDR preset in VLC.

Thanks. I have never had good luck with that, always seems to wash out the colors in Windows for me.Billycar11 wrote: ↑Sun Jun 21, 2020 6:07 pmJust turn HDR on in windows 10mercennarius wrote: ↑Sun Jun 21, 2020 5:36 pmOk..installed the 1.02 firmware on the WH14NS40 and it's working fine. I want to add one more thing to help those that may stumble upon this in the future while trying to play UHD discs through VLC. I was able to get VLC to auto play the 4K discs without having to go into VLC and click "open disc/Blu ray". It naturally wants to default to DVD so that is why it won't auto play a blu ray. There is a registry key for playing the DVD/blu ray drive with VLC. Mine was:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\DVD\shell\PlayWithVLC\command
The command line data for this key was:
"C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe" --started-from-file dvd:///%1
Open up Regedit, find the key, and change the 'dvd' part to 'bluray', but keep the rest of the syntax, like so:
"C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe" --started-from-file bluray:///%1
And voila, autoplay worked perfectly, for both Bluray AND regular DVDs. So no need for creating an icon shortcut.
Also, make sure to have the 64 bit version of java installed for menus to work (32 bit won't work with 64 bit vlc). Secondly, you have to already have moved over the correct files from the MKV folder into the VLC folder for VLC to work with these 4K blu rays.
Thanks again for everyone's help!

Does "un-crippling" the drive by flashing to one of these firmwares actually make the drive better, in all aspects?
For instance, writing and reading data blue ray dvds? and so forth?

Re: LG WH14NS40 1.04 >>> ASUS BW-16D1HT 3.10 >>> LG WH16NS60 1.00
Just wanted to post a quick thanks to all the folks involved in this sub. I was a hair trigger away from getting the WH16NS60, but found this thread, and saw that there's really no reason to get the WH16NS60 over the WH14NS40, so why not save the ~$60? It arrived with v1.04 stock pre-installed. I was able to flash directly to WH16NS60 MK 1.02 and has been working like a charm since for reg and uhd blu rays. If anyone is on the fence, the flashing process is super easy, just grab that tool from previous comments. After hours of research into UHD ripping and such, it's kinda funny, you really only have to hold your breath for the flashing process which only takes about 10 seconds. Suuuuuper easy and quick. Also using the recommended NexStar DX enclosure which costs nearly as much as the drive itself, (another tiny lol). Also if anyone is on the fence about spending so much on an enclosure, I can testify that this thing is a solid hunk, looks and feels very high quality, a definite buy-it-once sort of feel to it.

First time poster. I apologize in advance if this is in the wrong spot, but I believe it fits with my problem. I bought the LG WH14NS40 its got the MT1959 platform but I can't seem to Flash it. I've tried the powershell method and the Haxor guide. each gives an error. When I tried the flash tool I get the "DRAM NG 05/26/03".
this also happens with the other files that were suggested like first trying to flash with the ASUS_BW firmware and then the WH16.
I have also tried using the ASUS flashing tool and that gives me the error "#4"
Did I ruin the drive or did it just not go through any change what so ever?
When I load a disk it recognizes the title of the movie that is in it, and it will play in Leawo bluray software.
thanks for the help

Re: LG WH14NS40 1.04 >>> ASUS BW-16D1HT 3.10 >>> LG WH16NS60 1.00
Hi all, I'm new here Just got my LG WH14NS40 1.04 and looking for instructions on firmware flashing for MakeMKV. I've read through this thread and the other pinned threads. It's still not clear to me why someone would want to go with 1.00 if 1.02 MK performs just as well and doesn't require the intermediate crossflashing step? Can anyone explain this to me like I'm 5?

Good night ... how are you?
I hadn't noticed that my player (LG WH14NS40) was from 2013. When performing the procedure, he doesn't recognize any disc. I returned to the correct factory firmware and the problem persists. Is there any way to resolve this?

No you cannot. It will screw up the drive as it is still not an official NS60 drive.cryptojoe37 wrote: ↑Wed Feb 16, 2022 11:47 pmAfter my drive becomes an LG WH16NS60 can I flash the factory 1.03 from the lg website??
