Yes, you flashed the drive successfuly.

Also, to add to what Billy said, the disc you are trying to rip is Dune, which a lot of people are still waiting for decryption keys to be added. You might be in the same boat. If you haven't already, send in the Dune dump file to svq@makemkv.com and exert some patience.
Thanks!
I wondered if that's what it was after I posted because it said this...
The volume key is unknown for this disc - video can't be decrypted
Failed to open disc
This was new to me. I will send the tgz file, but I'm guessing a lot of people are doing the very same thing. :D

Not sure what else to do...

i noticed a few hours after i left the attempt to rip this. not sure how i missed it earlier

I'm hoping for some help. I purchased a new WH14NS40 drive on Amazon. I hooked it up to my computer, followed instructions found here, and flashed it from 1.05 to WH16NS60 1.02MK using this tool. The program reported that it was successful, and MakeMKV seems to support that under its LibreDrive Information. However, the drive simply will not read DVDs. I've tried several DVDs with no luck. They won't open in Explorer. They won't open in MakeMKV. They won't open in VLC.

Did I just happen to get a defective drive? I probably should have tested to see that it worked before flashing anything. Did I do something wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

No, your drive has encrypted firmware so the encrypted firmware check needs to be a tick. If you are having trouble flashing, tell us how the drive is connected to your PC?

Finally success! Or appears so…on the first disk 4k rip. Initially when i had the tick something was off so when i went back i got confused…either way it works. Thank u so much for your patience,

Now i did the “read” option to copy the original firmware (i think thats how it works at least) before i changed anything .

Would i use that firmware file from the read flash, if for any reason, i wanted to flash it back to the original settings? Would i leave the enc ticked or unticked in that circumstance. (I assume unchecked)

The original firmware setup allowed me to “full disk” copy dvd’s with dvdfab (something i havnt had good luck with on mkv) so there instances i might want to do that. (Assuming its safe to flash back and forth occassionally.)

So glad to have the hard part done, thank u again,

Hi all,
I just purchased an external Archegon MD-8107S-U3YC-UHD drive because up until now I have had no success at ripping 4K Blu-rays with other drives that are supposed to work.
I used the SDFtool Flasher with the firmware HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_BU40N-U101-MM01201-211711301153.bin and the tool said it completed successfully; however, it does not actually update the drive's firmware :(
Do any of you have an idea? Could it be that the housing the drive is in has been made in such a way that it does not support flashing (even though no errors messages appear) ?
Thanks,
Kristian.

Hi all,

first of all, many thanks for the excellent explanations. Since I am a Mac User, am I right that I can not use the SDFtoolflasher.exe since it it for Windows only? I do not have a virtual machine running/bootcamp on MAC. Do I need a windows PC or notebook instead?

I want to flash my LG BU40N, version 1.03 from 2019 (un-encrypted) and use a Vantec slim case. I have copied the appropriate .bin for the flashing but without the SDFtool I can not continue. I would be happy getting some useful reply.

best regards,
Tom

Yeah, probably a dud drive. The DVD laser could be dead. I'm still suprised when I hear someone say they are trying to rip a DVD. I haven't even seen a DVD in about 15 years!! Have you tried a blu-ray or UHD disc?

I still do occasionally rip DVDs, primarily for movies that haven't had Blu-ray releases. Recently, I was approached by a colleague who wants to pay me to rip and convert 30+ DVDs containing home videos. I made it through one disk before the drive (which has been on its way out for some time) bit the dust. I've wanted to upgrade to a Blu-ray drive for years, so I figured now's the time.

Anyway, good to know that it's probably a dud drive and not the result of something I did. Is there any way for me to flash the original firmware back before returning? I stupidly didn't back it up.

Yes, I attached a link for you in the previous response. (seel enlargened bold text above) You will need to use SDFtool Flasher to flash the drive back to WH14NS40 1.03-MK or 1.04-MK first before you can use the official WH14NS40 1.05 updater.

I've been doing some testing and it seems that the only way to switch between MK firmware on a BP50NB40-NB50 is by using the "RECOVER" option in SDFtool Flasher. For example, a BP50NB40-NB50 that has 1.03 MK Firmware on it, I'm unable to downgrade to 1.01 unless I use the "RECOVER" option. Or if I'm on 1.01 and want to switch to 1.03 I must use the "RECOVER" option. Both of the MK Firmware's have "DE" set @ 0x1ec056 so I know that's not the issue. I'm able to use the "ASUS ODD FW Changer (Modified)" to switch firmware on the BP50NB40 no problem. Also, I can switch firmware on my WH16NS40 with SDFtool Flasher no problem, i.e. going from 1.05 to 1.03 and back to 1.05. So this only seems to be an issue with the BP50NB40.

Another thing I noticed is that if I try to switch from 1.03 to 1.01 on my BP50NB40 and I remove the "DE" byte from the MK Firmware and flash with SDFtool, it won't produce any error. The process will complete 100%, even though it doesn't actually downgrade. However, if I do the same thing with my WH16NS40 and try to switch from 1.05 to 1.03 with the "DE" by removed, SDFtool will throw a "Command produced error code 0x8f052400" error.

So why the differences between the two drives? Is this a bug or just by design?

LG have done something to the latest model BP50NB40 which causes these issues. We haven't figured out what that is yet ..
