Ultimate UHD Drives Flashing Guide Updated 2024
Re: Ultimate UHD Drives Flashing Guide Updated 2021
Just wanted to thank Billy for the guide and Marty for the SDFtool. Got a BH16NS40 (manufactured August 2021) today with firmware 1.05 and was not entirely sure if the firmware is encrypted (for anybody interested, it is; the SDFtool did confirm that). Just used the WH16NS60 1.02 MK firmware and flashed it flawlessly with the SDFtool flasher on the first try and everything is working great. Made my first UHD backup and also a backup of some normal Blu-rays I have (all while MakeMKV Speed Control was set to "0=99" for maximum speed, much faster than before with my old 506BB external drive) and all went perfectly fine so far. Thank you so much for your information in this forum and also the flashing tool. Without the guide I would not have been so confident in buying a drive, a suitable enclosure (I used the ICY BOX one, btw). Finally I can backup my UHD collection!
Re: Ultimate UHD Drives Flashing Guide Updated 2021
Hi I used the program BH14NS40_N1.00-A4_patched.exe to flash my BH16NS55 drive with this firmware file DE_flash_HL-DT-ST_BD-RE_BH16NS55_1.02. It did not work an error message occured and said my drive is now in "Boot Mode". Now my drive is no longer accessible, drive not ready it says. What did I do wrong and how do I get my drive back in order? Thx!

Re: Ultimate UHD Drives Flashing Guide Updated 2021
Hey guys,
I made a stupid mistake when turning my two BD drives into "UHD Friendly" - the LG drive (BH16NS55) got upgraded without a hitch, but when copying the command for the ASUS drive (BW-16D1HT), I didn't pay enough attention and flashed the LG firmware.
I noticed my mistake and reflashed the 3.10 ASUS Firmware, but unfortunately the ASUS drive still won't read UHD discs. Fortunately enough, it still works with normal BD discs. For whatever reason it stopped reading those too today, so I stumbled upon this and flashed to 3.02 - now it at least is reading normal BD discs again.
Is there anything I can do to fix this? It's not like I'm ripping UHD discs all day long, but I would like to fix my mistake if at all possible.
Cheers!

Can anyone tell me if this drive is flashable to 1.03mk? Can’t find the SVC number…
Lmk if this is the wrong place to post this, and where I should post it instead.

Re: Ultimate UHD Drives Flashing Guide Updated 2022
Hi, I have tried the steps on multiple platforms for flashing a WH16NS60 Version 1.03 inside of the Vantec NST-536S3-BK 5.25 case. Both items are brand new and seem to be working, I can load a blu ray and play it and MakeMKV detects the disc easily. But I continue to get the following error on my mac when I attempt to flash it down to Version 1.02:
/Applications/MakeMKV.app/Contents/MacOS/makemkvcon f --drive /IOBDServices/68B4B4E0 --sdf-file /tmp/sdf.bin rawflash enc --in /tmp/HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH16NS60-1.02-NM00100-211810291936.bin

To also add some detail, my drive is SVC NS-60 and I believe the requirment is SVC NS-50+ so that should be ok too.itsvoodoo wrote: ↑Thu Jan 06, 2022 3:29 amHi, I have tried the steps on multiple platforms for flashing a WH16NS60 Version 1.03 inside of the Vantec NST-536S3-BK 5.25 case. Re: Ultimate UHD Drives Flashing Guide Updated 2022
Sorry for the noobish question, I've been a reader here for awhile, recently decided to rebuild my pc and the cases I like no longer have full sized optical drive bays. I see that in some cases the slim drives are better anyway. So it looks like the lg BU40N is sold out pretty much everywhere. There are a lot of clones/ads on amazon that claim to be that drive, but no way to tell for sure. Does anyone have any in stock reputable links for known good sources of these drives?
I've searched around, but many are not labeled LG and I don't want to buy a bunch and find out I've got the wrong ones.
for example:
https://www.amazon.com/HLDS-BU40N-Inter ... 248&sr=1-3
is this one legit? It seems like the LG drives are made by HLDS, but they're not labeled LG..

I did not email, but do you have a recommendation for working adapter? +1 on this. I've tried two 1099NEW s and 1 vantec. Given that I have a 5.25 drive, should I just plug straight into SATA for the flash process on an older computer at this point?Billycar11 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 06, 2022 10:50 pm

sorry guys this is the first im hearing of on the 1099 no working things just got more inconvenient in the flashing world i will move those two the not flashing section.
yeah best bet would be to do it over sata the owc may still work unless they all use the same updated chipset.
by any chance are you guys running windows 11 with tpm? that may have something to do with it

Re: Ultimate UHD Drives Flashing Guide Updated 2022
I tried on MacOS and Windows 10, those are the platforms I tested on. I do not run Windows 11 but can’t figure that it’s a Windows 11 specific deal. I’ll flash via sata and then try to see if the it will still rip in the enclosureBillycar11 wrote: ↑Fri Jan 07, 2022 12:58 amsorry guys this is the first im hearing of on the 1099 no working things just got more inconvenient in the flashing world i will move those two the not flashing section.
yeah best bet would be to do it over sata the owc may still work unless they all use the same updated chipset.
by any chance are you guys running windows 11 with tpm? that may have something to do with it
