Just got my Archgon MD-8107S-U3+BU40N(K) from the recommended drives list, which is correclty identified as:

Code: Select all

$ makemkvcon f -l
Found 1 drives(s)
00: dev_21:0, /dev/sr0, /dev/sr0
  HL-DT-ST_BD-RE_BU40N_1.01_211712221221_KZZICCG5934
But when trying to flash with the associated firmware from the ultimate pack, I get an error that was also encountered by another user, who had to resort to downgrading using the legacy flash tool, which I'd like to avoid, since this should now be possible the standard way from the updated 2021 guide, right?

Code: Select all

$ makemkvcon f -d "dev_21:0" -f sdf.bin rawflash main -i HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_BU40N-1.03-NM00000-211810241934.bin

Reading input file HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_BU40N-1.03-NM00000-211810241934.bin
Flashing flags = 0x0 : 0 0 0 0 : ---- ---- ---- ----

Command produced error code 0x8f1bd005
I'm on Manjaro Pahvo with Linux 5.14.18-1 and for the first time, tried the snap package, since I was missing some compile dependencies I couldn't find right away - but since makemkv works flawlessly, including ripping a bluray, I don't suspect that's the problem.

Hello everyone.

I tried to flash the drive firmware in order to enable LibreDrive, but unfortunately it failed with the following message:

Code: Select all

makemkvcon f --all-yes -d /dev/sr0 -v rawflash -i ~/Downloads/mk-firmware-pack-20200720/MK/HL-DT-ST/BH16NS60/HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_BH16NS60-1.02-NM00600-212005081014.bin

Current Drive ID: HL-DT-ST_BD-RE__BH16NS60_1.01_211901041419_KLJJ6OA2118

Write flags NG 05/FF/03

Command produced error code 0x8f05ff03
I tried this on windows and linux, but none of them work. I also tried the GUI tool, but the same error code pop up.

The following is my drive information

Code: Select all

Drive Information
OS device name: /dev/sr0
Manufacturer: HL-DT-ST
Product: BD-RE BH16NS60
Revision: 1.01
Firmware date: 2119-01-04 14:19
Bus encryption flags: 1F
Highest AACS version: 76

LibreDrive Information
Status: Possible, not yet enabled
Drive platform: MT1959

No disc inserted
Any ideas on how to solve this issue? Thanks very much.
I was able to flash the firmware after using this legacy flasher: viewtopic.php?f=16&t=18873#p70284

dammit, it *was* the snap - I shouldn't have been so lazy and just install pkg-conf, then compiling worked and with the "native" makemkv, flash worked like a charm with the firmware listed here:

Code: Select all

Reading input file HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_BU40N-1.03-NM00000-211810241934.bin
Flashing flags = 0x0 : 0 0 0 0 : ---- ---- ---- ----

Ready to write drive flash memory.
Type "yes" to continue, "no" to abort
yes
Operation started: Sending flash image to drive
 100% Operation finished
Operation started: Programming flash
 100% Operation finished
Done successfully
Drive info now shows LibreDrive is happy, too:)

Code: Select all

Hi, everyone!

I'm pretty sure I've scoured this guide to the extent that I can, but I'm still running into some issues getting my Buffalo BRUHD-PU3-BK working with MakeMKV reliably in general and at all for ripping UHD discs.

Both the Blu-ray and UHD Blu-ray I'm using to test the drive with are brand new and clean.

I have both USB cables plugged in via a USB hub. I don't know what either cable is for, as the instructions for the drive are entirely in Japanese.

It's my understanding that this drive is just a rebranded BU40N, so I've been trying various versions of BU40N firmware with nothing working consistently. The original post suggests using 1.3, but I've tried 1.3 and 1.4 and still have issues.

I'm using SDFtool Flasher v 1.2.3 and firmware for the BU40N from the MK pack. I've tried 1.3 and 1.4.

As far as I can tell, the firmware flashing seems to be successful each time I try it.

FYI, I have two of this same drive, and they're both exhibiting the same issues.

Here's what MakeMKV shows me when no disc is inserted:
Drive Information
OS device name: E:
Manufacturer: BUFFALO
Product: Optical Drive

Firmware version: 1.04
DVD all regions: Yes
BD raw data read: Yes
BD raw metadata read: Yes
Unrestricted read speed: Yes

No disc inserted
Here's what MakeMKV shows me when I insert a regular Blu-ray disc:
Drive Information
OS device name: \Device\CdRom0
Current profile: BD-ROM

Channel bit length: 74,5 nm (25.0 GB max. per layer)
Oddly, I also sometimes get a bunch of this beforehand:

Ripping the disc seems to work just fine, though. MakeMKV detects all the titles and pulls them from the disc without issue.

Much of the time, when inserting a UHD disc, MakeMKV claims that there's no disc inserted. Other times, I get something like this:

I have no idea what else to try. Can anyone help, whether it's by suggesting additional troubleshooting or potentially pointing me toward something I've missed?

I don't think the drive is getting enough power. You should not use a USB hub unless the hub has it's own power source.
Cheers :D

Oh my God...it's totally working. Time to pick up a USB hub with its own power source, I suppose, as my new PC totally doesn't have enough spare USB ports to devote two to this thing all the time. I'll let this thing hog my front USB ports in the meantime, though.

I'm glad I thought to mention the USB hub, and I'm glad you answered so quickly. I was really worried that maybe this drive wouldn't be as reliable as the Asus drive I was using for ripping regular Blu-rays, but it seems to be working now. Thanks!

D'oh. So, that's what that red light on the back meant. Haha. I probably could've figured this out had they included English instructions.

Thanks to both of you!

Ok, I've changed my way to rip 4K Blu-ray and bought a drive from ASMCOM. So I can sell my drive without opening the enclosure before.
......
The drive arrived today. It's a BH16NS40 with firmware 1.02mk for WH16NS60.

Now, the first two 4K-BDs are ripped without any problems.

But in the MK-firmware file exists a version 1.03 for WH16NS60 and a 1.05 for BH16NS40 .... could it make sense to change to one of these younger versions? Is there any benefit?
Do not change anything, leave as is.

Kind Regards

Asmcom
Meanwhile, ripping without any problems. But again here is my question about a newer firmware for a faster ripping 4k discs? The maximum speed I get is about 8x, perhaps 34 MB/s. I need about 35 minutes to rip Turtles Out Of The Shadows for example. Is a booster possible or another faster drive available?

No, that's about it. That is the fastest firmware. The norm is around 40-60 mins depending on size of disc.

I can't seem to get any sort of firmware flash to stick on my Buffalo BRUHD-PU3. Whenever I try updating firmware via SDF, it goes through the process, and it says its successful, but MakeMKV still keeps reading out the revision of "BU13". I've tried flashing the firmware through both the Command Line in windows, and previously mentioned SDF. Again, in both times, they say they were successful, but the revision doesn't change. I've also tried the Downgrade Tool, but whenever I try to run it, It comes up with the error "Valid ATAPI Device Cannot Be Found!!! F/W Model is "BD-RE BH14NS40"". Not sure why it's doing that.

I'm kind of at my wit's end here, I'm not entirely certain what I'm doing wrong, and as far as I can tell, this reader should be able to be flashed. It has Unencrypted firmware, and is on the MT1959 Platform. I'm relatively certain the drive was made post 2015 (the Japanese is kinda hard to decipher lol). I just don't know if I'm missing a step, doing something wrong, etc. Thank you for any help.

Hey, thanks for the reply. I was using the unencrypted commands because SDF had said it was unencrypted. But using the encrypted commands worked and I'm in business, thank you! I didn't realize the part of the guide included my firmware as one of the encrypted ones.
