You could try the old SDFtool Flasher (version 1.2.0) as that doesn't check the drive platform.

The old Flasher READ Firmware worked, where it didn't with the newer. WRITE Firmware still did nothing.
"enc?" should not be checked, correct?

The Custom Firmware seemed to fail, email response sent.

Checking "enc?" made no difference. START button still did nothing.

Through recommendations from Billy, ran the Asus Flasher and it worked.
No problems yet.

there is a situation where if this happens again with encrypted firmware there would be no way to flash the drive.

Unless it contains non-Pioneer drive, the chance is about zero. No Pioneer hardware is currently "UHD Friendly", and there is no firmware available to change that.

Mike thinks it is possible, but it won't be simple and it won't be soon.

Pioneer drives do have their advantages; USUALLY they're top performers at writing disks, more so that the LG/Asus units.

It seems that MakeMKV is not recognising your drive's platform as MT1959,

This is very unusual...

in SDFTool the full drive is labelled:
HL-DT-ST__BD-RE_BU40N_DN13_211907041426_MO9K6D81503
if that's anything.

for future reference - "-t" switch forces the tool to select specific "drive logic" payload, ignoring the auto-detect logic. Specifically "-t mtk19xx" forces mtk19xx payload.
