Re: Best Firmware Version for WH16NS40
Thanks all. @MartyMcNuts, for the 1.04 MK file you mention to flash first, would that be 'HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_BH16NS40-NS50-1.04-NM01701-211901041338' that I mentioned in my first post or a different one from the MK pack?

Re: Best Firmware Version for WH16NS40
Thanks. @MartyMcNuts In the MK pack, I only see files for WH16NS40 1.03 MK and WH16NS40 1.05 MK, but not a 1.04 MK for this drive model. Should I be looking in another area?
Re: Best Firmware Version for WH16NS40
BH16NS40 is the retail vesion of WH16NS40 (bulk). There is a 1.04 in the OLD folder for BH16NS40 that can be flashed to your drive.

Yep, strange we never got a WH16NS40 1.04 MK. You could flash either that BH16NS40 1.04 MK or WH16NS40 1.05 MK. Then flash WH16NS40 1.03 MK.
Cheers

Re: Best Firmware Version for WH16NS40
Is it okay to use the WH16NS40 firmware on a WH16NS60? I misread the title of this thread and flashed it that way. First 1.05 MK and then 1.03 MK.

Re: Best Firmware Version for WH16NS40
I guess I wouldn't. It was really a mistake on my part. Now back to ns60 1.02 MK.

Re: Best Firmware Version for WH16NS40
So I ended up flashing BH16NS40 1.04 MK and then to WH16NS40 1.03 MK and it was successful.
The drive is slower at ripping as stated it would be, however blu-rays have been successful, apart from my only 4k disc at this time of MI 5: Fallout, where MakeMKV crashes at some random point in the process. Not sure what's going on there, although from quick reading it seems to be a common issue with that movie and this program. Have to test some more. Haven't yet burned discs, but will try that soon.
Thanks for the help I received!

Re: Best Firmware Version for WH16NS40
New to these forums, have been ripping my blu rays for years using dvdfab passkey and bdrb for shrinking (when I don't think a movie needs HD audio...)
I have several 4k movies and hated having to use the disc compared to my nvidia shield/server setup. 4K ripping seemed really daunting compared to the blu ray I have been doing. after 2 years I started looking into it again and thanks mostly to the people at makemkv it seems a lot more simple now as far as the drive setup goes and ease of ripping.
So a few questions and I am posting here since I just bought a WH16NS40 from amazon (arriving tomorrow) for $57 which seemed insanely cheap.
after spending a few hours reading a lot on these boards and watching a few you tube videos I am still a tiny bit confused
-I will most likely be receiving the 1.05 firmware which I understand is encoded.
-because of this its my understanding I can only use the sdftool flasher to flash to needed firmware, can't use the asus/lg flasher tools
I have already downloaded the sfd tool and it seems simple enough.
-I put the firmware file for my drive wh16ns40 1.05 into the same directory as the sdftool, so when i get my drive and fire up the tool it will be there to select. I need to check enc box, select that file and its done...
-question 1) will that work on its own, no need to change firmware? or is that the version that will only work with makemkv?
-question 2) assuming I need different firmware for other programs (like if I use dvdfab 4k ripper) then I will next want to change to the wh16ns40 1.03 firmware in the "old" folder? that should work with other programs? Never used Makemkv before so not sure if I will need other programs, but have always used m2ts files when ripping.

Re: Best Firmware Version for WH16NS40
So for the WH16NS40 you flash the WH16NS60 1.02mk and then flash WH16NS60_1.00 original from this page? https://www.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic ... 873#p70284
Can all this be done using the makemkv flasher?
Will this still allow burning on the WH16NS40 or would I still be able to burn even if I was running the WH16NS60 1.02mk? Is there a benefit in going to the original over Mk? Thanks for your help. Still learning
