Marty and team,

OK, I can say now for sure my old WH16NS40 BD drive was not working. I got a new LG WH16NS40 which was manufactured July 2020 and came with FW 1.05. I was able to use the SDFtool Flasher to flash the MK FW WH16NS60 1.02 onto it (with the "encrypted" option selected) and am now FINALLY...after over 1 year...able to rip my Blu-ray discs!!!

:D :D :D :D

THANK YOU!

Just like to say a big thank you to Mr McNuts

I was expecting this to be a long and frustrating process - instead 10mins to find this tread then piece of pi$$.

For the newbies like me - ASUS BW-16D1HT with FW 3.10 arrived today along with an external 5.25 caddy from Lindy.

Put it all together - download the SDFtool Flasher and am ripping less then 5mins later.

Again, thank you.
You're welcome!! Enjoy!!
My drive stopped working. Would still read the UHDs and the disk title but failed to open them. I had moved the SDFTool and all related files to a different disk.

As soon as I put them back it worked as expected. So my question is how to I move the files and get the drive/makeMKV (or both) to locate them and work.

Thanks in advance

After Googling and reading through other threads and trying those methods I finally saw the link to this thread and the SDFtool flasher. After downloading the tool and the MK firmware files I was able to flash my WH16NS40 to the unencrypted firmware and then down to WH16NS60 1.00 firmware so I can read and dump UHD Blu-Rays. Thank you for your efforts here and making this such a painless process!

Hello, sorry that I have to ask, but am a real newcomer ;-)
I have the WH16NS40 with firmware 1.05 and would like to downgrade it.

I have installed the following:
MakeMKV v1.15.4 (Win)
sdftool_flasher.exe

I downloaded this firmware and put it in the same folder where the flashtool is:
DE_LG_WH16NS40_1.01.bin

I select now in the Flashtool my drive and the suitable firmware, set the hook at enc? but get this error message:

Error:
Command produces error code 0x8f052400

What am I doing wrong?

Here is the device info from Makemkv:
Drive information
OS device name: E:
Producer: HL-DT-ST
Product: BD-RE WH16NS40
Revision: 1.05
Serial number: -----------
Firmware date: 2120-05-06 14:40
Bus encryption markings: 17
Highest AACS version: 65

LibreDrive Information
Status: Possible (with patched firmware)
Drive platform: MT1959
Harware support: Yes
Firmware support: No
Firmware type: Original (patched version available)
Firmware version: 1.05
DVD all regions: Possible (with patched firmware)
BD raw data read: Possible (with patched firmware)
BD raw metadata read: Possible (with patched firmware)
Unrestricted read speed: Possible (with patched firmware)

No disc inserted

Thanks a lot for your help.
Merry Christmas!

Did you download that 1.01 firmware from the same post as the SDFTool Flasher? If so, you did not read properly as that firmware is to recover the old NS40 drives that have been incorrectly flashed with newer NS40 (NS50) firmware. You should never flash this firmware to a new drive!!

You should download the MK firmware pack from the link Billycar11 provided. I suggest flashing to WH16NS40 1.05 MK (using enc option) then you can flash to whatever firmware you want to use (without enc). The most popular firmware for that drive is WH16NS60 1.02 MK.
Cheers :D

I am about to flash a BU40N with this tool, too. Could you please tell me which firmware you used? Did you select ENC option? Did you go back to DE firmware after?

I currently have an ASUS BW-16D1HT, with firmware 3.10 installed when bought. (status checked with MakeMKV before flashing)

Using SDFtool to flash this, with enc ticked, I selected this firmware from the MKV firmware pack ASUS folder.

ASUS-BW-16D1HT-3.10-WM01601-211901041014.bin

SFDtool seemd to run ok, no error message, green prog bar completing etc, but then reopening MakeMKV and checking the info, nothing seems to have changed. The info still states 'original firmware (patched available)' and 'read (possible with patched firmware)' etc. My understanding, having watched flash guide vids, is the MakeMKV info section should have changed following flashing, to reflect the new status. Is this correct, as since nothing change in spite of SDFtool apparently working fine, what might otherwise be the issue ?

Ahh solved. I should not have ticked the enc box, leaving it unticked resulted in a proper flash :)
