MakeMKV will display current capability status in the 'Info' pane, if you have a system w/ it installed. Something like this if you need to flash:

LibreDrive Information
Status: Possible (with patched firmware)
Drive platform: MT1959
Harware support: Yes
Firmware support: No
Firmware type: Original (patched version available)
Firmware version: 1.01
DVD all regions: Possible (with patched firmware)
BD raw data read: Possible (with patched firmware)
BD raw metadata read: Possible (with patched firmware)
Unrestricted read speed: Possible (with patched firmware)

or this, if you're already good:

LibreDrive Information
Status: Enabled
Drive platform: MT1959
Firmware type: Original (unpatched)
Firmware version: 1.00
DVD all regions: Yes
BD raw data read: Yes
BD raw metadata read: Yes
Unrestricted read speed: Yes

This tutorial is for MacOS, but should generically apply to linux:

Can someone recommend or confirm what kind of cable I could use to connect a slim/laptop drive to a PC via USB (mini SATA -> USB)?

I bought an LG BU40N recently, don't have a laptop, was hoping that one of the two "approved" Unitek cables would work, but they have the full large SATA connectors. I need one for mini SATA. Just a cable, BTW, I don't want an enclosure.

Thanks,
I will need to wait then till I get the adapter. There is no way for makemkv on libreelec. Just want to be sure that I don't have unsuitable generation of the drive.

Thanks for the hint for macOS. I guess only thing I have to adapt is the path to this /Applications/MakeMKV.app/Contents/MacOS/makemkvcon

The current FW version looks to be recent enough (3.x), but if you don't see "Drive platform: MT1959"(MT1939 is too old), STOP!

Thought that would be 'close enough'.

Ok, if that should happen I can't expect it to work and would need to get a different drive, right?

Yes, absolutely fine thanks.

Is this part of the guide a typo

WH14NS40 > WH16NS60 1.02MK

Seems odd to put the NS60 FW on the NS40

No. NS60 is the best firmware if you're only using MakeMKV. It's very reliable, fast, and no bugs.

Seeing all the posts related to external adapter issues, I'm glad I have an original CM Stacker where I can fit up to 10 optical drives. 8) I just picked up a Feb-2020 built BW-16D1HT in retail box for cheap since the seller had reading issues when using PowerDVD. It came with 3.10 and immediately flashed it to the 3.10MK version with SDFTool, no problems with MakeMKV ripping a Blu-ray.

It worked perfectly under linux with the linked description. The command to run was plainly makemkvcon without any path etc.
First UHD rip seems to work fine too. Thanks for support.

I am trying to find a factory copy of the 1.04 version for a WH16NS40. I can only see 1.03 and 1.05. Would anyone happen to have a copy of that? Thanks.

If it needs RMAing, just put 1.05 on it.
