ASUS BW-16D1HT - Poor Quality for Older DVDs?

I've had my ASUS BW-16D1HT (USB connected) with the Libredrive firmware enabled for about 2 years. It's been working ok, however, recently I've noticed that older DVDs have produced MKVs that freeze. I have noticed this after ripping: The King of Queens - all seasons, Cliffhanger, and The Running Man.

I've seen some information that suggests these drives:
  • are good for Blu-Ray and 4K, but are mediocre for difficult DVDs
  • these drives wear out quickly (I've ripped ~500+ 4K, Blu-Rays & DVDs in total with this drive
What's interesting is that if I use my LG internal drive (HL-DT-ST- BD-RE BH12LS38) on my older PC, the older DVDs rip with no problem.

Is there a fix for my more recent ASUS external drive? Any guidance would be appreciated

No fix. Simply put, not every drive likes every disc. This is why most of us have 2 or more drives. I have 5 myself. If you have a problem disc, use whatever drive can rip it successfully.

MartyMcNuts, thank you for your response. This is the response I was expecting to receive.

I would like to get one more external DVD drive myself. Considering I already own a:
- ASUS BW-16D1HT (USB connected)
- LG internal drive (HL-DT-ST BD-RE BH12LS38)

Which external drives would you recommend for DVD, Blu-Ray & 4K assuming I can get my hands on one?

Thank you.

Any available Pioneer model. Would have to purchase from Billycar11 or Asmcom. I don't recommend the Chinese fakes on ebay.
A Verbatim 43887 (containing a Pioneer BDR-UD03 which can be cross-flashed for UHD compatibility).
An ASUS BW-16D1X-U and hope it comes with a Pioneer inside (instead of a LG).

I'm all out of Pioneer's but do have some Verbatim 43887's available, depending on your location.
