Automatic HK downloading is disabled or failed.

Post by PapaHomey2 »

I'm trying to rip 4K disks from the James Bond, Daniel Craig Collection, but 4 of the disks keep getting the following message at disk reading:
Downloading latest HK to C:\Users\papah/.MakeMKV ...
Automatic HK downloading is disabled or failed.
Then I fail to continue to read the disk.

What is Automatic HK downloading, and how does it effect reading the 4k disk?

Can I resolve this issue, or do I need to exchange the disks?

Thanks, PapaHomey

Hash keys are how disks are identified to determine what is needed to decode them. MakeMKV checks unknown keys against a table (the Hash Key table) to get that... Except that table has to be downloaded, if the key you have isn't in the copy of the table you have already.

That table is kept up-to-date on a server that is (unfortunately for many of us) on a server close to the author, which happens to be in an area that a lot of domains block access to. That's why there is a topic about that at the top of the General forum, hkdata.crabdance.com or hkdata.fairuse.org not found. A few options are listed in there to work around the restrictions your particular internet provider puts in place to block access.

PapaHomey, I had to add an exception into my threat protection software to allow download of the HK file. After I did that, i've had no problems downloading the latest file.

MakeMKV only needs to be on-line if it needs to download the HK file. And it only needs to download that when you are ripping a new disk that wasn't there the last time it downloaded keys.

Some people operate with it off-line all the time, using the "keydb" table that can be downloaded separately.

I'm running into this issue today on the 4k Harry Potter series. I had adjusted settings in my Xfinity app to download the file successfully in the past but now something else is blocking the download.
I can download the file from Makemkv.com just fine, but upon opening a disc to backup and starting the process, the file disappears and the error returns. Discs seem to be backing up fine but this will eventually be an issue in the future.
