I respect and appreciate your advice, but I have never had to go to such lengths. It's funny I finished the LENGTHY backup using the other program. All I did was cycle the tray again for the upteenth time. Fired up MakeMKV and got a find rip now. Very happy even if it took a few goes.
i think it has more to do with the fact that this is a triple layer disc.
triple layer disc's take longer to be read by the drive, and longer to back-up/remux since it has to break through that third layer.
it took me a few time's. before windows would even open the disc folder. but opening the drive and reinserting the disc usually solved it for this and other 3 layer discs (Scott Pilgrim, Transformers The Last Knight, etc)
I had issues ripping disc one of the Canadian release on two separate units. MakeMKV would indicate that it was reading the edge of the disc, and things would slow to a crawl before read errors would occur, and the rip fail.
After ripping the disc as an ISO using AnyDVD (copy protection removed), I was able to get MakeMKV to process the title without issue.
Disc 2 worked without issue from both retail units.

Is your drive connected via USB? Is it also powered by USB? If so, are both plugs plugged into a powered hub or directly into your computer? You might be running out of power during the rip.

The drive is in an external OWC mercury pro enclosure connected to my macbook pro by USB and powered by a separate power adapter. I was able to rip Disc 2 no problem. No issues with any other discs either. Just JL Disc 1. Fails every time.

Clean the disc
Replace the disc
If most other discs are fine you probably just got a defective disc.

Yeah, i'll have to see what Best Buy will do. Had this sitting a while since I bought it. May be SOL.
