Read Error

Post by charnathan »

I was taken to this read error page when performing a full UHD disc back-up:

http://www.makemkv.com/errors/read/

And the solution provided on this page says "there is a fast and simple way to convert such copy into encrypted MakeMKV backup that can be opened by MakeMKV later. See our forum for details." (See last paragraph on this page)

BUT, it doesn't provide a link to the thread that explains what to do next. And I don't see any sticky thread that explains this either.

Can a mod please provide the exact steps to follow and update the error page to include a link to the solution in the forum?

There are usually two types of read errors:

1) the decryption key for the disc is unknown and you will need to submit a file dump; and
2) errors that are the result of a dirty or defective disc.

If you want to perform a full backup, use the option at the top of the program. You can choose to either make an encrypted backup if the key is unknown or decrypted backup if the key is known.

I'm mainly trying to figure out what is the "fast and simple" way to convert copying the disc manually (via copy and paste from the disc to a folder on the desktop) so that I can compare if my original back-up is corrupted or not.

The easiest way to determine if the disc is or isn't readable is to create a decrypted back up if the key is know or an encrypted backup if the key is unknown.

Manually copying and pasting won't work for every file on the disc since the disc is encrypted.

What read errors are you getting?

I'm also hitting this. Following the instructions on the page (and not having "denial") I copied all of the files to my hard drive. Now I'm looking for the "fast and simple way to convert such copy into encrypted MakeMKV backup that can be opened by MakeMKV later. See our forum for details."

The error from makemkv was:
Failed to save title 1 to file D:/WorkArea//MARVEL'S IRON MAN 3 - BLU-RAY_t01.mkv
Encountered 95 errors of type 'Read Error' - see http://www.makemkv.com/errors/read/
0 titles saved, 1 failed
Error 'Scsi error - ILLEGAL REQUEST:READ OF SCRAMBLED SECTOR WITHOUT AUTHENTICATION' occurred while reading 'DVD+R-DL ASUS DRW-24B1ST j 1.11 J8D0CL009982' at offset '1048576'

Looking a little further, I've found this thread:

viewtopic.php?f=12&t=17087&p=60530&hilit=discatt#p60530

I'm currently working through that and will post whether it worked.

Ok, no, that didn't solve the problem. Now I'm getting:

Failed to save title 4 to file D:/WorkArea//MARVEL'S IRON MAN 3 - BLU-RAY_t04.mkv
Encountered 258 errors of type 'HashCheck Error' - see http://www.makemkv.com/errors/hashcheck/...
0 titles saved, 1 failed

That page indicates that I have a failing bluray drive...

HashCheck errors are often the result of the disc being dirty. Have you tried cleaning the disc? I like to use warm water and plenty of dish soap to gently clean the disc. After rinsing, I dry the disc using a can of air to blow off the water on the data side.

The Hashcheck errors came when I followed the instructions and copied the discatt.dat file to my copy directory, then ran MakeMKV from the hard disc directory.

The disc is relatively new and looks pristine. I went ahead and cleaned it anyway and tried to run MakeMKV against it again. Now I'm getting a slightly different error stream. Perhaps my drive IS going bad:

Are you getting errors when trying to use MakeMKV to read the optical disc to make a (presumably decrypted) backup?

Or are you getting errors when trying to read an ISO?
