Ironman 1/2/3 Boxset - error after 15-20GB when ripping the UHD disks

//UPDATE 2019-11-19//
The Iron Man 1-3 BluRay + UHD Boxset I bought arrived sealed. The disks were clean and shiny under every angle.
YET THEY WERE DEFECTIVE!
I asked a friend if I could borrow his disks and the WH14NS40 as well as the BW-16D1HT ripped them without an issue!
So the lesson here is that even if the disks is brand new, arrived sealed and looks flawless, it can still be broken!
I bought the Ironman 1/2/3 boxset which contains the normal BluRay's and the UHD BluRay's
I'm using an Asus BW-16D1HT where I flashed the 3.02 FW following the guide in the forum.
https://www.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic ... 873#p70308
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yfpf6HoMMis
makeMKV 1.14.5 manages to rip the normal BluRay version just fine!
But on all 3 UHD disks makeMKV throws an error
after it copied between 15 to 21 GigaByte of the movie already.
I can reproduce this behavior on another PC where makeMKV was never installed before.
Code: Select all
Saving 1 titles into directory D:/extract

Iron Man 1
Iron Man 2
Iron Man 3
All disks are fresh out of the box, they are super clean. It's odd that all 3 UHD disks produce the same error while the normal BR disks can be ripped just fine.... right?
Could there be something wrong with the FW?

Anyone an idea what is happening here?
Or was anyone else able to rip the UHD disks of that box set? If so, which drive do you have?

Clean the disks
Try different UHD disks
Try different drive lots of defective ones out there

Clean the disks
Disk are fresh out of the box so they were super clean. Still, already tried to clean them, no change.
Also if the issue would be caused by dirt on the disk the ripping process should always occur at the same place.
But when I try to rip a disk 4 times then it will always throw the error at a different time during the process (it manages to rip different amounts of GBytes).

Try different UHD disks
I currently only have these 3 UHD disks, but I will get the new Spiderman next week so then I can test that too.

Can you elaborate on that?
These "defective" drives suddenly throw an error after ripping like 30% to 60% of the movie?
If so, which drive should I get? The forum suggested that the Asus BW-16D1HT is a good drive and I just bought it this week. It's brand new.
I just tried and flashed the 3.10 MK firmware onto the drive and still face the same error. Ripping normal BR's works like a charm.

You type that like you think it's true. Disks in sealed packages can be contaminated, scratched, and even broken. I've even seen sealed packages with the WRONG disk in them.

I looked at them under light and different angles. No scratches, no nothing. Clean, clear & shiny.
Also.... if they would be dirty or broken wouldn't the rip then stop at the same location?
because it does not.
At every rip attempt makeMKV rips largely different amounts of data for the main movie. Anything between 12 to 25GBytes until it throws the error.
And..... I did clean them out of pure desperation.
Until now I've tried to rip each UHD disk 5 times - no luck.
while makeMKV rips the normal BR disks of that boxset just perfectly, the UHD's are a no go.
Is my brand new Asus BW-16D1HT the issue? If so, which other drive should I get?

Any of the drives from the recommended drives guide are fine you might have just gotten a bad one.
I personally recommended the WH14NS40 with ns60 firmware
Trust me I have probably gotten the most bad drives of anyone I'm over 35 defective and after that I just stopped counting. It is extremely frustrating these things should have never left the factory but they did.
They don't even work for there intended use when that are defective I tested one time with a defective NS60 in powerdvd to play an UHD disk and it was getting pixelated in and out playing the movie with a known good disk that worked fine in another ns60.

Just FYI I bought the LG drive which arrived yesterday and it is working perfectly, reading all the discs that in my Asus drive gave the SCSI error that you have encountered.
It rips the discs much faster too.
Hope you get a good one when it arrives.
Cheers

Cool! Mine arrives tomorrow, can't wait!
May I ask which FW you flashed onto it and which guide you followed?

I used Marty's flashing app on page 1 of the mega thread and asked him which firmware to use, he replied:
For a WH14NS40, if you only plan to use the drive with MakeMKV, then go with firmware WH16NS60 1.00.
Cheers

WH14NS40 running the MK
"HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH16NS60-1.01-NM00100-211711202000" ripped Iron Man 1 UHD without an issue!
I could also rip the Spider-Man Far from Home UHD disk without any issue at all!
Sadly I have MakeMKV crash (FATAL ERROR) when trying to rip the Iron Man 2 & 3 UHD.
