Yes, you'll get Dolby Vision with P7 mkv. However in case of FEL, this layer is disregarded and only BL and RPU will be processed.
RTD1619DR based players simply lack a second HEVC decoder.
So this is not real Dolby Vision profile 7.

Here, "this" is a bit tricky as I don't know if you mean the playback or the sourcefile. To start with P7 mkv as source, it is "real" as it does carry all video- and metadata that is on disc.

If you mean "DV FEL playback" on RTD1619DR players, then no, it isn't "real" Dolby Vision. It is noticeable whether FEL is being processed or not. Certainly in A-B comparison.
There are some mediaplayers (and tv's built-in players) that do process FEL. I wouldn't call it "real" Dolby Vision though. Nowadays tv's lack native 12 bit panels and couldn't produce enough nits for even 10 bit colors. So do realise that, after the initial processes which produce a full-blown Dolby Vision image, color depths and brightness dynamics have to be significantly downscaled to meet the display's physical capabilities.

Gotta be honest, I make/keep 7 FEL and 8 for storage reasons + non-DV playback devices and only keep 5 (and then HDR10 version also) if I have to, but as long as you can watch 5 that's good enough. Of course I'm saying this because I can play and compare all of them to decide myself. But I only do all this for archive stuff, when watching brand new stuff for the first time I often just watch the dv5 file.

Hi! Crop RPU which mode? Thank you in advance.

You can crop them manually with the dovi_tool itself (CMD). However there is an option to crop RPU's during the inject workflows (Mode.I).

I can't help keeping to remind that not every P7 carries FEL. It can have MEL instead, which is equivalent to P8.1.

That having said, I couldn't advice on whether to buy or not. In my viewing environment, the additional impact varies per title. During regular playback sometimes it's even hard to notice. Where you could only tell by scrutaneous A-B comparison on still images. To my eyes screen calibration brought more joy than additional FEL enhancement. It comes with a pricetag though.
Among my players is a RTD1619 based Zidoo Z9X. When viewing a FEL movie, I have no urge to switch to UHDBD player because I'd miss out on something. There is a lot to be enjoyed on DV even if FEL is ignored. IMO, the main awe of Dolby Vision (and HDR10+ for that matter) lies in the applyance of dynamical metadata.

Everybody should decide for himself. Go compare players that do and don't support FEL processing. Where you also may want to compare tv-led to lldv. Imagine a lower-end tv displaying a better picture when tonemapping is performed by a higher-end player. And vice-versa.

I'm definitely keeping an eye on P5. When these streams became available I did have problems with the "quality".
Which overall has significantly improved though, and seems to keep improving.

What steps did you take to decode P5? Should it happen automatically?

It should happen automatically but it does not for 99% of the demos & p5 web dl I tested at 1st.
But they do now.
I did not update my mac yet just been testing on windows but I am curious about the mac as well.

Running ZEN+ with Nvidia desktop. I do not have those settings. I guess a Dolby Vision License is needed?

For windows yes. Or a hack I found which allows resolve to think it’s connected to a doblyvision monitor, that was discussed here a while back.

I'm trying to use RESET's DV scripts to convert my Westworld discs to mp4 using the old mp4muxer method using .ts input (7-2-4).
For this I've used TSMuxerGUI first to extract the first episode (00089.mpls) to ts file.
The audio track seems to be TrueHD and I didn't downconvert it to AC3.
When opening the ts file with the script, it will demux and use eac3to extract the AC3 audio from the trueHD track.

Here's the output:

Code: Select all

                        _____ __ ___ _____ _ _
